AVG Free update
Posted on April 9th, 2009 at 08:22 8 commentsAVG Free just bumped up to version 8.5. You’ll no doubt see the upgrade notification when you log on.
I’ve come to expect this more and more from AVG: if you follow the links, and you aren’t very careful, you’ll end up installing the free 30-day trial of a PAID version of AVG. You don’t want or need it.
Follow the link on the upgrade notice. Then, at the bottom of the page, click the link that says “Stay protected by downloading our basic free protection today.” You have to click a couple more times, but each time remember you want FREE – not the 30 day free trial.
In the end, you can upgrade with few hassles. But, man, AVG keeps on trying…

Would you like to note that the March 23, 2009 posting relates to this? I am tempted to try, again, the direct “upgrade notification” which didn’t work the first time after seeing this posting.

Don’t know about the e-mail, but it’s easy to get the free AVG upgrade. Just go directly to the web site, bypass the Paid Version ads, and download the Free installer to your Desktop. Remove the older version (off line) and install the new version. Then go on line and get your definitions updated. Simple, really.
But if you use AVG Free, don’t forget to scan with a rootkit scanner (like F-Secure Blacklight) about once a week. AVG Free has no rootkit protections, last I read at their site.

rc primak, Thanks. Not simple when it’s a “first time”.

I did it! Now, how do I get rid of the AVG tool bar that I decided I don’t like after getting it with AVGfree8.5?

Has anyone had problems getting the free 8.5 AVG upgrade to install? I’ve downloaded the file a couple times and I get a message that it will update over the next few hours, to check back then. When I check back, the old version is still up and running. I don’t remember getting this type of message in the past when I’ve upgraded.

Same thing as happened to Dave (Apr 14 post)
happened to me now (Apr 24). If it doesn’t
shape up, I’ll just do the download > uninstall
> install procedure. -
