    1. Woody- I took your advice and downloaded, Firefox. Wow, what an awesome browser!

      Thanks

      Tim

    2. Woody — for those who may be entertaining the idea of downloading and installing Firefox 3.5.1, I have two questions:
      1) Is it advisable to continue to maintain IE by applying the monthly patches?
      2) Are there any unknowns related to downloading and installing Firefox you can warn about? My PC is using WinXP SP3.

    3. Won’t it be automatic like the earlier patches? That’s the not Beta version right?

    4. Firefox notified me to “come and get it”, so I did. It has taken me a long time to learn that
after I download, it still has to be clicked and installed. Now I have one more tool bar, that I didn’t realize I had OK’d one more bar
cutting across/reducing size of screen! when I
took it as default page (which I had before).
I find it hard to figure out how to remove tool bars, although I’ve done it. Hard to remember.
There is a chrome in my future, I hope.

    5. hey..
when they say that its “faster, safer and smarter” than the previous editions.. what changes are they talking about exactly..

    6. Many and varied. I just finished writing 840 pages on that very topic. :)

    7. Woody – you may have missed my 2 questions on this subject on July 20. Thanks

    8. I try to reply to comments, but frequently don’t have time. Sorry. I hope that other folks can chime in and help.

Yes, absolutely, as I say in all of my books you MUST keep IE patched. But don’t use it. Use Firefox.

Firefox ain’t perfect, but problems with it are usually cleared up quickly. I don’t know of any problems with the latest version of Firefox and XP.

I must have missed something. I’m still on Firefox 3.0.11, and Firefox is suggesting I update to 3.0.12. I don’t know that I have any problems with what I’ve got.

Are you suggesting that now is a good time to jump to 3.5? or just that if we’ve already gone to 3.5, that we should update to 3.5.1 to fix the flaw?

Note: I’ve got Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1.

    11. hey woody,
those 840 pages that u;ve written..
any chances that i can read them over the internet? .. without paying a lot..

    12. Jim in Western CO –

Hi! Firefox 3.5 should be your current version for several reasons.

Security is enhanced. Several previous weaknesses were patched. JavaScripts run faster and don’t crash as often, in my experience. There’s this great new feature called Personas, which are instantly available skins to make the browser’s appearance change when you want to (such as when viewing very dark or very light colored web sites, or ones whose background textures match too closely your current theme, making the navigation bar and other toolbars hard to read).

And Mozilla does not want to keep supporting (with patches and updates) Firefox 3.0,.xx anymore. Also, many extensions have been updated and do not remain as useful on FF 3.0. NoScript, which enhances Firefox security and blocks many ads, is one extension which is now optimized for Firefox 3.5. And the new Private Browsing Mode, while not as good as the IE 8 InPrivate Mode, works well to slow the proliferation of cookies and other browser sludge which can slow down Firefox over time.

So do yourself a favor and get Firefox 3.5.1. It has no serious reported problems with Vista Premium-64 that I know of. If there are any issues, I’m sure someone will chime in.
