Man, does this take me down memory lane…

… not particularly good memories, mind you.

Tamsin Oxford at Techradar.com just posted a fascinating, pictorial stroll through the history of modems. Well worth a gander.

    1. Hey Woody how long are you going to be at defcon 2 I have some important updates that are 1 month old.

    2. Ah it brings back some memories in 1999 when I was using an NEC computer pre-installed with Win95, which had an internal 28.8kbps dialup modem.

    3. Linwood -

I’m going to look into the Defcon status in the next couple of days. I think MS has ironed out the problems with the December Black Tuesday patches…

    4. Hey, EP –

You and I must be of the same generation! My original computer was a Swann X-10, followed by a Zenon, both of which were originally DOS machines with 28K or 14K internal dialup modems. Windows 95/98 brought better modem speeds, all the way up to 56K. In those days, that was considered a screaming fast speed on the Internet. Then again, all I did was Juno Mail (client — no web mail) and visiting a chat site or two.

How times have changed since the 1990′s!

And on a more general note, I expect the usual Defcon-4 the first week after New Years Day. There is no rush on any of the MS December 2009 patches, as far as I know.

    5. Good times. They bring back great memories for me! The first time I went on the Internet with Mosaic with a 14.4 modem (had to upgrade) and dial in to Los Angeles. No POP’s closer at the time.

Before that, it was just BBS’s and things like that.

      What’s wrong with those memories?!

The waiting, the phone bill (my Mom was pissed at the $400 phone bill… the Internet was addictive!)… Of course, I was 17 at the time.
