  • Still have Internet Explorer 6 – what to do?

My good friend BB wrote with this:

Woody, Never did put IE7 on my machine , but it seems that IE8 is getting good reviews. You think its ok to go with it now? If it doesn’t have that Genuine Windows checks…I ‘m still not sure if I’m ok or not..Oh Well !

If you’re still using Internet Explorer 6, run to the Internet Explorer 8 download site and get it installed, like, right now. IE 6 is the single largest source of PC infections ever invented.

If Windows Genuine Advantage prevents you from downloading or installing IE 8 (I’d be curious to find out if it does), you can still download and install Internet Explorer 7 - Microsoft removed the WGA check from IE 7 in October, 2007.

Don’t worry about installing or running WGA on a Windows XP system. If your computer fails the WGA test, the worst that will happen is your desktop background (wallpaper) will turn black and you’ll get nag balloons out of the lower right corner. You’ll still be able to use every part of WinXP.

While it’s important that you download, install and update IE 7 or IE 8 – Windows has hooks into IE that expose your PC to all sorts of infections – you shouldn’t use IE. Firefox offers a much better browser. It’s free, and it doesn’t interfere with Internet Explorer at all.

Download and update IE to keep Windows secure. But use Firefox.

    1. Upgrade to IE 7, yes, but leave IE8 well enough alone for at least a year.

IE8 is getting good reviews, yes, but those’re shills, clacquers, bought-n-paid-for. A month ago, MS asked its employees (according to theregister.co.uk) to send out spam to at least 10 friends, telling them how much they liked IE8 and how well IE8 works with … a suggested list of sites.

The problem is, a) IE8 screws up webpages constantly, and b) to work as IE8 is intended to work, IE8 requires an HTML tag be entered on the webpage being viewed. Webmasters have NOT complied, so most webpages give IE8 headaches.

If I understand it correctly, that HTML tag tells IE8 whether to pretend to be www-standards-compatible or backwardly compatible with IE6.

You can manually toggle between the two modes, but why bother? USE FIREFOX INSTEAD.

Install IE7, and then leave it ALONE and use FireFox for all your browsing needs.

For the rare banking website or Microsoft.com website that requires IE, you can even use a FireFox add-on called IE Tab or another called IE View that will automatically load up webpages that YOU designate into IE tabs or windows running WITHIN FIREFOX.

    2. For those who have Visual Studio 2005 and/or 2008 software installed, IE8 can cause script errors with some VS2005 & VS2008 wizards.
      Read here for the solutions:

The IE8 package for XP does not include WGA, woody. it can be installed without the “genuine” verification.

again, some addons & programs [like the Skype addon] will need to be updated to be compatible with IE8. check the IE8 release notes page on which addons & programs will be affected after installing IE8.

    3. Internet Explorer 8 is very good because it is as stable as Opera. I hate the previous versions of IE like IE6 because it hangs frequently. :
