What to do about KB 967715?

Currently I’m a bit fuzzy on your recent post on KB967715 as whether to install now or wait. I do use the “shift” key, but am not clear as to install now or not. Could you please be a bit more specific on this in one of your next blogs? ( have to remember, I an xp dummy—-lol).
Good question.
Right now, I recommend most users remember to push the Shift key when inserting any kind of memory into an XP computer – USB drive, the SD card from your camera, even a CD or DVD.
People in a corporate environment aren’t so lucky. Companies can’t expect eveybody to hold down the Shift key – and they’re paying for it.
The definitive articles on the topic, in my opnion, are the two Susan Bradley wrote for Windows Secrets Newsletter. Her March 5 Top Story AutoRun patch a long time coming for XP users describes the patch and its shortcomings. Her March 12 follow-on article Microsoft flubs a way to disable AutoRun in XP tells you where Microsoft went wrong – and how to fix it.
The bottom line is that it’s a LOT of work to get XP to disable AutoRun. Ain’t worth the effort for people who are smart enough to hold down Shift. But you HAVE to remember to hold down the Shift key every time you insert memory.

Hi ‘Woody’,
I’m a computer imbecile, i.e. I haven’t a clue about sorting stuff out on my PC. I have noted that kb967715 has repeatedly downloaded and installed on my computer for at least 40 occasions. I guess therefore that it is not going to successfully install even though it says it is successfully installed each time. I have windows XP home edition. Can you tell me what i need to do to ‘finalise’ this microsoft update or should i not worry about it and do nothing? -

Not to worry. We’re all dummies around here.
There’s a lengthy fix for the problem you describe, waaaay down at the bottom of the Knowledge Base article 967715.
It sounds like some antimalware programs may get in the way. You might be able to accomplish the same thing with less hassle by disabling your antivirus program before applying 967715 for the umpteenth time.

Hi Woody,
I also have the same problem with Windows Update KB 967715. I installed it a bunch of times and it says it installed, but every time I go online it wants installed again.
I have AVG antivirus program. How do I disable it to install the update? Is it dangerous to disable the antivirus to install updates? -

Hi there
I have the same problem like so many of you. Last night I made a crucial download of 950582 and it basically solved the problem that had been taunting me for months. The following was copied from Microsoft website –> [To disable the Autorun functionality in Windows XP, in Windows Server 2003, or in Windows 2000, you must have security update 950582, update 967715, or update 953252 installed.] I looked it up in the add and remove programs, and the file 950582 wasn’t there, as soon as I installed that and with the 967715, my problem is gone. I read so many other postings online that were way too complicated for me so I hope this might help you.
