Why fix Word as an e-mail rendering engine? That's like trying to use Word to create Web Pages. Same problem with HTML rendering. Face it -- Word is not intendeed to be a substitute for an e-mail client (and neither is IE), and neither Word nor IE is intended to serve as a Web Page Authoring program. If you need these specialized features, get the appropriate software. Thunderbird is free, and so are numerous HTML Web Page authoring programs. Stop bugging Microsoft to fix something which is not broken.

Sanda,

Not sure about OE, but in Outlook 2007 copies of outgoing email are saved in the Sent Items folder if you have a check mark in the box under Preferences/Email Options. I'm pretty sure Outlook Express makes that option available too.
