MS-DEFCON 2: Lock your machines down
Posted on June 9th, 2009 at 22:02 6 commentsWith June’s Black Tuesday crop of patches imminent, now’s the time to make sure all of your computers are set to “Notify but don’t download” updates. Instructions are in any of my books, or click Start | Control Panel | Security Center and take it from there.
There’s a big crop of patches coming. I suggest you sit back and let the pioneers get the arrows in their backs.
We’re at MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.

I received an update for Vista 64-bit today named, KB955430, but I am confused because it says the update was published on 4/28/2009.
Is this part of this month’s patches or is this an older update that I am now somehow just getting, and should I go ahead and install it?

It’s an Automatic Update patch. I haven’t heard of any problems with it, but like anything involving Windows Genuine Advantage, you should be very aware of the fact that you’re installing a program that may brand your copy of Windows as Disingenuous. Or something along those lines.
There’s no pressing need to install it. I say hold off.

HA! Well put…

See my note to Tim about KB 955430.
Defender patches shouldn’t be installed automatically. Weird.
