Microsoft just released the November 2009 crop of Black Tuesday patches, with an announcement festooned with color graphs and detailed explanations.

Golly, patching never looked so good. Six Security Bulletins covering something like 15 separately identified holes.

As usual, I look to SANS Internet Storm Center’s Black Tuesday post for insight and KB numbers.

There’s a big bunch of Excel patches all rolled into one Security Bulletin, and a Word patch, in addition to the usual crop. The only one that looks menacing to me right now is MS09-065, and it doesn’t affect Windows 7 systems.

Stay tuned. Let’s see what got screwed up this month.

We remain at MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.

    1. Hello Woody,

Thinking that difficulties I am having with Outlook 2003 might be patch related I called the 866 number that SANS provides.

Nothing you have ever said captures the essence of Microsoft. Two of the voice mails say “We Would like to Advise.” The legal department must be writing scripts.

After pressing a lot of buttons I think I was close to the office that works with problems involving patches. That office voicemail said that they were closed and I should call back during normal business hours. No one at Microsoft has the intelligence to “advise” the Time zone and the range of hours i.e. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific Time or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. central time.

      Be well

      Bob

    2. HA!

I hear ya. It’s funny because the people who do the key validation are always helpful and effective. Wish I could say the same for the rest of MS support.
