  • New version of Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

Microsoft has just released an updated version of the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor beta.

It’s a good tool for testing your Windows XP or Vista computer, to see if there will be any known problems in switching over to Windows 7. The Upgrade Advisor looks at all of the hardware attached to your PC, and scans your installed programs, and warns you if something is known to cause headaches.

I was surprised to find that one of my printer drivers on my Vista machine is out of date. It’s amazingly thorough.

Well worth downloading and running – or telling your friends.

    1. I was wondering, does it just sit there while it is checking the system? I clicked “start check” and it does not do anything.

    2. I’m running Vista Home Premium SP1, and following your advice to delay installing SP2 (since update isn’t offering it, anyway).

      The new upgrade advisor says:

“You need to update Windows Vista before you can upgrade to Windows 7. Run Windows Update and install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2″

Is this right? Do I have to get SP2 working before I can upgrade in place to Windows 7?

      Thanks everyone for your advice.

To keep drivers up to date, I use DriverMax, which is free, although it does collect and store information about your computer. The program can also back up all of your drivers to a single folder, which restores about as easily as a .REG File. Very handy if you need to upgrade or reinstall.

Again, this is not the only possible solution and I am not paid for my endorsement of DriverMax.
