I still strongly recommend that you do NOT apply the October Black Tuesday patches.

Susan Bradley’s Patch Watch column in this week’s Windows Secrets Newsletter describes known problems with MS09-054, MS09-056, MS09-058, MS09-061, and MS09-062.

    Oy.

MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.

    1. You and Susan Bradley keep talking about MS this and MS that, but when I go to Windows Update in Vista all I see are KB numbers, so how am I supposed to know what you are talking about?

    2. Susan -

The problem is that each Security Bulletin (MS09-xxx number) has multiple – sometimes many KB numbers. The best way to sort them out, in my opinion, is with the SANS Internet Storm Center list. For October, that list is at http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=7345 .

In general, with a few exceptions, I give a blanket GO/NO-GO recommendation. Right now, I’m saying hold off on applying any updates. I’ll give the green light when I think it’s safe – or when I think MS won’t be making any more changes, whichever comes first.

    3. And if you read Susan Bradley’s column in WS Newsletter, it becomes obvious why NOT to apply this month’s patches — not yet anyway.
