If you bought and paid for BitDefender, the antivirus product from Softwin in Romania, and you run any 64-bit version of Windows, you may have woken up to a dead computer.

    Congratulations.

Official instructions for getting your machine back are on the BitDefender site.

But of course you use Microsoft Security Essentials, and you don’t need to worry about it. Don’t need to worry about paying for it, either.

    1. Couple weeks ago, I was actually seriously considering putting BitDefender on two of my machines to replace my expiring WLOC subscription.

I eventually went with something else and man do I feel like I dodged a bullet.

    2. Ditto for Avast (free), ESET, AVG Free, etc. … all are just fine as of this writing.

Once in awhile, it seems that any non-Microsot AV clobbers the PC it is designed to protect. Even more fun is when one third-party antimalware program clobbers another antimalware program. Been there, done that, too.

    3. is there some way of getting Microsoft Security Essentials without having to have the Microsoft genuine advantage? Also, can you install MSE with Norton Security (which we have)?

Your copy of Windows has to pass the “Genuine” test before you can install MSE.

As for Norton – it’s a bloated, nagging, expensive, cloying piece of garbage that slows down your system at the same time it destabilizes Windows. Get rid of it.

    5. Actually, Woody, Norton Internet Security has cleaned up its act ever since the 2009 version. I have had a laptop running the 2009 (updated to 2010) version for a year now and it has behaved itself to the point where I’ve installed it on my main desktop as well. No problems whatsoever. On the other hand, what I do NOT like and what will most likely keep me from staying with Norton is their policy of completely deactivating ALL functionality when the license expires — you are left totally defenseless if you don’t pay up on time. What a way to make friends and keep customers happy!!
