  • Hotmail “Reply” does not include the text of the incoming message

A friend of mine just wrote with an interesting problem:

I use Hotmail. Up until a week ago, when I forward, or reply, the original text in the incoming email shows up in the new email I’m about to write. Suddenly, last week, the text area on any email I wish to reply to, or forward, is blank! Any attachments are there, but no covering text.

Ends up that Roger hit a bug in Firefox 3.6. There’s a discussion about it on the Firefox support forum. Looks like you have three options: go back to version 3.5.7; use IE for your Hotmail; or wait for Mozilla to fix the bug.

    1. I think that should be Firefox 3.6 and 3.5.7 respectively.

      Cheers.

    2. are you sure about those FF versions 5.6 and 5.57 ;-)

OOOOOOPS. I’ve been struggling with a bad head cold for the past two days. I think I left my brain in bed. Thanks for catching this..

    4. squirrel mail from Plusnet works fine with 3.6 when sending a reply

    5. I send your head cold some virtual chicken soup, Woody. Ques.: Firefox keeps saying 3.6 is available, when I post the home page, and no longer say it’s beta, BUT, I’ve not yet been prompted nor has it installed automatically, like previous. Is it still beta? Why not auto update from Mozilla Firefox of 3.6 yet?

    6. I found that uninstalling and reinstalling 3.6 (without uninstalling all the user files and extensions)solved the problem. It only seemed to be an issue on my PCs for the particular user account Firefox was updated from.

FF 3.6 is out of beta. To get it, click Help, Check for Updates. No idea why FF hasn’t notified you yet.

    8. I went back to 3.5.7

    9. THANKS! I did and got it. Very odd that it did not notify me. So far, seems OK…this was my first stop after install…

    10. It seems like whatever “bug” in FF causes this shouldn’t actually have this result. GMail doesn’t do it, and I don’t have trouble with fields populating on any other website.

Also, I am using Opera, not Firefox, and still have this issue.

    11. weird Hotmail problem.

not a problem when using Google Chrome 4.0. Hotmail’s Replay and Forward buttons work correctly and include the incoming message text.

    12. I’ve just tested my Hotmail email with Firefox 3.6 under WinXP SP3 and I do NOT get the problem. strange that other people who have FF 3.6 installed are experiencing it a few days ago but I’m not getting the problem.

    13. Also not a problem with Yahoo Web Mail. I’m not sure this is an actual Firefox bug, any more than I am sure the Personas vs. Themes issue is truly a bug.

It could be Hotmail or one of its scripts interacting incorrectly with the new Firefox version. I’ve seen things like this happen before when Firefox, or its Java plug-in, were updated. Web Mail went nuts for a few days or a couple of weeks, then the web mail site operators updated their scripts, and everything returned to normal. Maybe this will happen here.

Certainly, the behavior of Firefox has changed in many, mostly subtle ways this time around. But beyond that, I don’t see any major bugs so far.

My own Personas issue was probably a misconfiguration resulting from me not following the rules and avoiding trying to use third-party themes with personas. That’s not quite in the Release Notes, but something very close is there.

    14. this link fix the bug..

      Work fine with me.

    15. I’m using 3.6.3 and it happens! I can’t forward intereting job ads to a buddy! This is urgent, please!

    16. 3.6.6, problem still exists

    17. Click on View in the menu bar, top left of Firefox browser page then mouse over Character Encoding then click on Unicode(UTF-8)even if it is already selected. It’s not a fix but it recovers the page.

    18. Sorry I made a mistake you need to click on reload first, follow the instructions below.

    19. rc primak could be correct – it might be more of a problem with Hotmail than with FF.

I was having the above problems, but Hotmail has just been upgraded and so far, I’m no longer seeing the above problems.
