January 2010 Black Tuesday a Real Yawner
Posted on January 13th, 2010 at 16:07 3 commentsSo we get one Security Bulletin, MS10-001, and it’s Critical on Windows 2000, barely noticeable on any other version of Windows.

Woody,
I have a question about a Windows Update that just appeared on my computer.
KB972270.
Since the newer version of Windows Automatic update doesn’t say whether this is ‘recommended’, or ‘important’, I went over to the suggested Microsoft page to see if I really needed it.
When I hit the ‘more information’ icon in the Windows Update window, it referred me to the update you mention, MS10-001, which says that for Windows Vista, this update has a ‘low aggregrate security rating’ (??) and replaces MS09-029 which is ‘critical’ for windows Vista. Ithought this update was just for Windows 2000.
I’m confused. Do I take this to mean I don’t really need this update or should I download it along with the MST and junk email filter for this month..
Thanks

Important to note that the MS10-001 security updates replace the MS09-029 security updates.
My aunts do use an old Dell computer with Win2000 SP4 and will continue to use it, even past its July 2010 extended support date. Right now they can’t afford to buy a new PC with pre-installed Win7 and they are still using some programs that aren’t compatible with Windows 7.

Let’s wait and see if MS10-001 breaks anything. In the interim, don’t apply anything.
