Microsoft says NO to the F1 key
Posted on March 5th, 2010 at 07:21 2 commentsYou may have read about Microsoft advising people to avoid the F1 key. People who like to take jabs at MS have seized on the opportunity to point out that the Redmond Emperor Has No Clothes. Of course, you read this blog, so you knew that already.
As MS explains in Security Advisory 981169, if you’re running Windows XP and you use Internet Explorer, you’re vulnerable to getting infected if you press the F1 key to run help files offered up on the Internet.
You don’t have to worry about it. You’ve already upgraded to Windows 7. And you never, ever, ever use Internet Explorer. Right?
Forget the F1 key. Get Firefox or Chrome.

Is Microsoft getting paranoid about the F1 “Help” key recently? sheesh. I DO use that button to launch Help & Support in WinXP SP3 occasionally.

Tsk, tsk, Woody– once again, you’re broadcasting the MS party line.
MS’s marketing weenie team has been trying to convince us that IE6 is a security risk (of COURSE) but that their (THEIR, not OUR) preferred fix is “buy WIn7, because win7 never comes with one of the older versions of IE”.
That’s like a sleazy car dealer saying your car dashboard’s cupholder’s broken, so you ought to buy a new car.
By now, IT folks should recognize the smell of a stupid MS sales pitch, and the stench of F.U.D. that MS uses to push its latest turds at us.
Imho, it’s sufficient to keep IE patched, use Firefox instead of IE for all browsing, and stick with XP as my OS of choice.
