MS10-015/KB977165 causing blue screens
Posted on February 12th, 2010 at 10:06 10 commentsToldja so.
Microsoft confirms that “after installing the February security updates a limited number of users are experiencing issues restarting their computers”
SANS Internet Storm Center identifies the problem as a Blue Screen.
I’m hearing rumors that there’s much more to the story. Stay tuned. And for heaven’s sake, don’t install the February Black Tuesday patches, OK?
UPDATE: Looks like the Blue Screen happens on systems that are infected with a specific rootkit or other type of malware. When MS10-015 is applied, the infected systems suddenly fall over and play dead. Good details on Brian Krebs’ site.

I read that part of it seems to be caused by an infected ATAPI.SYS driver, so scan your system before installing this patch.

Hi Woody.
I always wait for your say-so to install patches, but would it be okay to install the KB 890839 malicious software removal tool. I mean just select and install that on its own when it first arrives on the Black Tuesday, or does that in itself sometimes cause problems? Just wondering. Cheers.

THANKS so much for leaving both numbers on the posting. I only get KB numbers from “them”. Am checking here daily, as usual.

It’s always safe to update the Malicious Software Removal Tool, but it’s even better to run Microsoft Security Essentials. If MSE is working and updated, MSRT isn’t really necessary.

Yep, that seems to be the source of it. I expect MS to give official results shortly.

I read the link to the Microsoft posting. In that they say they immediatly stopped offering the update through the Windows Update system. No they didn’t: it still shows up when I log on to Windows Update

They may have fixed it by now….

I download updates, but do not install until you give the ok. I have KB977165 downloaded. What is my procedure for getting the updated version of this update?

Wait. When the time comes, you just need to go through the usual Windows Update procedure.

oh man, woody, my cousin who lives in San Diego had just told me the KB977165 update killed his XP computer. he had to do a “repair” installation to get rid of the update. I have to advise him to shut off the automatic update feature on his XP computer so that he doesn’t encounter the KB977165 problems again.
