  • MS-DEFCON 2: Hold off on patching

Sorry. In my haste, I neglected to officially raise the flag and warn everyone to hold off on applying any new patches, including MS10-001.

We’re at MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.

    1. Not sure if this is an update issue or not but the update of Adobe reader failed on two of my vista machines that I had done the Windows patch. (error 1303 when downloaded required changing ownership of some directories to fix) Adobe Reader quickly updated on machine that I had not yet patched. Not sure if patching and the Adobe problems are linked on not.

    2. Yikes!! On 1-13-10 I downloaded and installed the following on Laptop WinXP Home:
      1. MS .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 – KB974417.
      2. Hotfix for WinXP (KB961118)
      3. Security Update for WinXP (KB972270)
Am I in for some problems? Should I be on the lookout for anything troublesome?

The .NET Framework patches are generally a mess, but if you’ve got it, don’t worry about it. The other two should be OK. Make sure you have Microsoft Security Essentials, and that you’re running Firefox, right?

    4. Woody: One other question. I downloaded 2 January updates for desktop WinXP Pro (Firefox & MS Security Essentials) but have not installed them, yet.
One is Security Update KB972270 which you said was OK responding to my earlier laptop question.
The other one is WinXP Update KB955759.
Would it be ok to go ahead and install the both of them or just KB972270?
      Thanks

Go for both. The second one updates a small program on your PC called the Indeo Codec. It isn’t a Microsoft product, but you should fix it anyway.
