MS-DEFCON 4: Get patched now
Posted on August 5th, 2010 at 10:36 22 commentsThe July Black Tuesday patches have come and gone, and they’re not too bad.
Now’s a good time to get patched up. I recommend that you apply all outstanding Microsoft patches, then make sure you have Automatic Update turned off in anticipation of next week’s onslaught.
Those of you with Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows 2000, or if you use ESET NOD32 antivirus, please note the blog entry below. You’ve got some interesting times ahead.
I’m moving us down to MS-DEFCON 4: There are isolated problems with current patches, but they are well-known and documented here. Check this site to see if you’re affected and if things look OK, go ahead and patch.
UPDATE: Sorry, I should’ve made it more clear. Yes, I’m recommending that you go ahead, throw up your hands and give in to the offered .NET patches. I don’t think there’s any chance MS is going to fix any of them from this point – so patch ‘em and brace yourself for the next round.

When you say “get patched now,” does that include the .NET patches (KB982526, KB956250, and KB982670) that you’ve told us to hold-off on?
-
Woody, does that mean we should also install all of the .Net patches from a couple of months ago?
-
@Flavet, Thanks for confirming (8/4/ reply two blog entries back) that it’s KB2286198. I am “taking the plunge” : I saw Woody’s reply to Bill on same blog entry comment section. I thought I have SP3…but, am one of the low tech older folks… If the patches wreck my Windows 2000 XP pro on antique rebuilt laptop, I’ll be pushed into studying/reading/learning faster Windows 7 using Woody’s Windows 7 for Dummies All in One…Windows 7 came on a very cheap, discontinued, factory new built (only 6 months old and already discontinued and a little out of date)Acer notebook, which I’ve been using as a (magnificent) DVD player while getting ready for Windows 7. PS Seeing on news sites that Google and Verizon are near
to making a deal to kill “net neutrality”, my whole ISP switch to new computer has so many implications…. So, “stay tuned”…I’m downloading the patches…. It may be awhile before I can report back. Like one of my favorite books says (”Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”), “Thanks for all the fish.”. -
Done. The KB2286198 (out of series, special patch) was #3 and I was not fast enough to write down the KB # for #8 of 8…
I feel like Gilda Radner’s character Emily Latella (old, old Sat.Night Live), “Oh, well…” I have Windows XP and that’s not 2000…was confusing near-copyright dates…So why is the icon prompting me that there are new updates????? Oy vey….When I got my computer, used, with programs that came with it, (and before I read Woody’s Windows XP Pro for Dummies because I was clueless – and am only slightly more clued now, 2 l/1 years later)I had no idea how much time would be spent on updates, patches…

Woody,
Is this also a go-ahead on the NET patches (for Win XP-Service Pack 3)?Thanks!

Morning Woody:
First of all Congrats on the new one. You must be happy and proud.
Anyway, question is you previously stated to patch everything except .NET patches. Does this still apply for the 08/05/2010 update go ahead.
Thanks is advance for your answer and all of your help in the past.

Hi Woody,
I currently have the fixit applied for the Help Bug, and had been waiting to get the all-clear from you before applying the patch for it (KB2229593).
I’m not at home, so I can’t check yet, but should this patch still come up for me in Windows Update even though I still have XP SP2? It did show up when the July patches first came out, so I’m hoping/assuming it would still come up for SP2. Is that the case?
Thanks!

Should do the .net patches too that you had earlier warned us not to?
-
Woody: Does your instruction to install all outstanding patches include the 3 .NET Framework items that’s been on hold or should we continue to ignore those downloads?
Thanks -

I still have two .NET Framework patches outstanding (KB982526 and KB982670); should I still hold off installing these?
-
Hi Woody,
I am assuming that we should still be holding of on installing the .NET updates?
Also, in June I was offered the optional update KB968930 Windows PowerShell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0 for Windows Vista. I have not installed them as I do not know what they are and suspect that I do not want them. Do you know what they are or if they are useful etc.?
Thanks

How ’bout the .NET patches? They okay to patch?
-

Should we also go for the .net patches you had earlier warned us not too?

Does this include the NET patches? (I have 4 sitting on my list from last month)

Aside from the LNK Patch (went perfectly well on both of my laptops — Windows XP Pro 32-bit SP3 and Windows Home Premium 64-bit) I was only offered one Julyu patch — the Windows Help Center Patch. No problems there either on either machine.

I hope I’m not nit-picking… do you mean to include applying the DOT NET patches as well?
-
Woody,
Are you including the .NET patches in your recommendation to install all o/s patches? Or should we continue to hold off on those?
Thanks,
John

Does this include the .NET patches?

@Chrs, @John, @John G -
Yes, I’ve given up on the .NET patches, and recommend that you install them.
Sorry, I should’ve made that more clear. At this point, the major problems are ironed out, I think. They’re always a mess, might as well get them in now.
-
@Bill -
It should come back again.

@Woody
The plethora of comments above should give you pause to be sure to be inclusive in your go-ahead messages, especially regarding those things that you have warned about ‘not applying’.
I cannot understand why so many readers kept asking the same question? Do they not read any of the comments before making a comment of their own? Do they think that since you have not yet answered the earlier similar questions, that their question is the one that will trigger a prompt reply?
-
@Flavet -
Part of it is a question of timing. I personally approve all posts before they appear. (You wouldn’t believe how much spam I get on this forum.) Particularly in this case, many people posted questions about the .NET patches immediately, and I didn’t get to them for about 24 hours. Thus, many similar posts backed up. Rather than just approving one or two, I decided to get them all out, so people realize that I received and read their posts.
