  • Oy gevalt! 14 security bulletings coming

    It’s a record – and not a good one.

MS advises that it has 14 security bulletins, patching 34 separately identified security holes, coming on August’s Black Tuesday.

Get patched up now, OK? Heaven only knows when the coast will be clear again…

    2. Matt Parker – Woody advised elsewhere that we may as well do the the .net patches to.

    3. @Matt

Woody grudgingly said OK on the .NET patches.

      See his earlier post:

      MS-DEFCON 4: Get patched now
      http://www.askwoody.com/2010/msdefcon-4-patched-4/

I had no problems on 2 home computers with Windows XP Home SP3.

    4. Even with all the NET patches installed, update fails to install the security update for PowerPoint 2007 (KB982158) Could this be because I use Office 2000?

    5. If you don’t have .NET Framework or .NET 4, and if you have no programs which ask for .NET, Woody (and I) recommend not to get .NET Framework or its patches.

But in Windows Vista and Windows 7, where every copy has a version of .NET Framework, the patches are needed, although not the v.4.0 upgrade. That’s what Woody and Windows Secrets contributor Susan Bradley seem to be saying. Woody was indeed reluctant to recommend these .NET patches, but he seems to have finally given in and said you should patch whatever versions you already have. They show up in Add/Remove Programs.

    7. @Grandma -

Entirely possible. I wouldn’t worry about it.

    8. @Bob -

Precisely. At some point you have to update .NET, if you have it. Might as well do it now. MS has had a chance to work out many of the problems.

    9. I swear, my next computer is going to be an Apple. I’m tired of these patches and viruses.

    10. weather your (A) fan of them or not or if u need them or not they do help and if your running any programs of Microsoft. Not having them at all. Well lets just say don’t turn on your computer on because it wont run as well. As it wood if they’re installed. And Mr. Woody Congrats to U And Mrs. Woody And Justin on Of the Arrival of the new Little One. Many Years of Joy!!! To Ya.!

Apple has a whole lotta patches. They just aren’t publicized as well, or scrutinized as effectively.
