  • Windows Genuine Advantage lawsuit fizzles out

Gregg Keizer at Computerworld reports that the lawsuit filed in the wake of Windows Genuine Advantage phone home discoveries has been dismissed.

Multiple lawsuits filed in July 2006 claimed that Microsoft mislead users by labeling the WGA software as a security update, and failed to tell customers that WGA collected information from their PCs, then frequently “phoned home” the data to Microsoft’s servers. The plaintiffs later combined their cases and asked the court to grant the joint lawsuit as a class-action.

Last month, the judge denied class action status. Last week the whole thing just fizzled out.

    Oh well.

It isn’t clear to me which version of WAT you would get if you re-install Windows.

    6. Update for Rights Management Services Client for Windows 7 (KB979099)

      Download size: 1.0 MB

this is what i uninstalled from windows update should i reinstall it?

    7. it depends on what version of Windows you are using, john.

Under WinXP, WGAN (wga notifications) is relatively easy to remove if WGAN was somehow installed. xp-Antispy is one tool that not only disables WGA checks but removes the WGAN files.

WAT is only included in Win7, woody.

Just a note on EP’s comment – XP-Antispy is the notorious piece of crapware.

Don’t worry about re-installing it for now. Wait until the MS-DEFCON level gets back to normal…

    10. is it needed to continue with windows 7?
