  • MS-DEFCON 4: Install all Microsoft patches

I’ve been looking at the ongoing problems with the .NET patches, and with Office 2010 SP1, and decided to give the blanket go-ahead again. There are a few real problems with the .NET patches, but I don’t see them getting better any time soon, so I’m recommending that you go ahead and install all of them.

If you’re paranoid about the .NET patches, look at the list I published last month, and avoid them again.

But I’ve installed them and Office 2010 SP1 on all of my machines, and nothing’s gone belly-up.

I suggest you do the same.

I’m moving us down to MS-DEFCON 4: There are isolated problems with current patches, but they are well-known and documented here. Check this site to see if you’re affected and if things look OK, go ahead and patch.

Is the post coming from China?

    2. Do you still recommend against windows 7 SP1?

    3. My modem kept losing contact with the ISP, even though the link was there. Installed new modem same problem. Did a web search and found that some people using webroot found a conflict with one of the recent window patches that wiped out the dns part of the router (that could be rebooted though).

I uninstalled webroot on all 3 machines reintalled it and so far, so good. But who knows.

Anyway, there seems to be a subtle conflict between webroot and one of the last set of patched.

Examining it further is far beyond my skill level.

    4. Hmm – downloaded and installed the patches, 24 I think. Now I am being offered a 297 Mb Office 2010 Service Pack.

    5. Must have put my concerns in the wrong place, haven’t gotten a reply-but, it is about patches.

Fianlly got the IE 8 on, after having to do the Srv Pak 1.

Then it said-it didn’t add patches. There were 61 at first blush. Added some obvious, then what next?

It seems they weren’t sending Vista materials. Some are back to ’08; others all the way to July 2011! Some are net. patches too amongst the remaining 40ish.

      Wow! this non-techie is swamped.

      What should I do now?

You should apply all outstanding patches. I’m not sure which version of Windows you’re running, but if it’s Vista or Win7, you’ll be given the opportunity to install IE 9. Install it. You may have to reboot several times to get all of the patches applied. Now’s a good time to do it because there’s a big potfull of ‘em coming on Tuesday.

Yes, that’s Office 2010 Service Pack 1. Go ahead and install it. Not a big deal, but you might as well get it out of the way now before the next deluges arrives.

      Thanks for the report! Ouch….

Go ahead and install Windows 7 SP1. When it asks about installing Internet Explorer 9, go ahead and do it.

I live in Phuket, Thailand. Moved here almost 11 years ago. My Dad moved here five years ago. My oldest son lives up the road in Cha Am. I have a Thai wife and a one-year-old baby. Life’s good in the tropics!

Drop a line if you ever get out this way.

    11. Not sure if it is worth more space but just in case someone else has the same problem.

Ran 3 of my 4 machines in my home network yesterday all vista business; all automatically doing webroot scans. No problem all day.

this a.m. all machines off, turned on my little baby netbook with win7 and webroot. Seemed to work, until webroot did its automatic scan and voila! network disappeared (have to pull out plug of modem and then put it back in to get network back). Reintalled webroot and first scan worked without destroying network, but then shut off machine so as to be able to work with other machines. First scans follow a different logic than the automatic scans so not sure if that showes anything.

At lunch, vista business machine with webroot did an automatic scan and network was still up.

Have reported it to webroot but if others have any hints what to do, would be appreciated.

(ISP sent out 3 modems thinking it was a modem; helpful folk)

    12. Woody: WinXP 8-8-11 – On 8-5-11 downloaded the current updates + 2 .Net Framework updates from June that I was holding. Clicked on the icon to download and to-date have had no response relative to a notice that the updates are downloading and the resulting notice to install the updates. Still hanging in limbo. Sometimes, it’s close to a week before I get the subsequent follow-up notices. What’s that all about?

Downloaded the updates on the laptop on 8-5-11 and it went fine. D’loaded immediately.

Not sure. Just keep connected to the Internet and see what happens…
