I’ve seen several reports of this error. The new version 4 of Microsoft Security Essentials refuses to install,  and the installer spits out an error 0x8004FF83.

Microsoft knows about the problem, but I haven’t heard of any resolution.

There’s a discussion going on the Microsoft Answers forum. If you’ve encountered this error code, you can help a lot by going to the forum, following the instructions and sending the setup logs they’re requesting.

I didn’t get this issue with my Toshiba Satellite Windows 7 HP 64-bit, doing the upgrade from the direct download, Version 4 over Version 2.1, both fully updated.

I encountered this problem on my fully patched Vista running on a Dell E521 that was already running MS Security Essentials. Windows said a patch was available so I started Windows Update. The patch was reported to be for Security Essentials, was downloaded and installation started, but ended with Error 0x8004FF83. Also, my installed version of MS Security Essentials went off line and was reported as such by the security essentials page.

I tried Windows Update a second time with the same result after almost an hour of Update trying to install the patch, and with MS Security Essentials still off.

Next I downloaded from MS support and ran a new install of SE from Microsoft support, but got the same error.

Finally, I downloaded the SE new install but didn’t run it until I had disconnected my Ethernet connection to my DSL modem. This seemed to allow the installation to succeed. Also, MS Security Essentials was reported to be running again. Once installation was complete I reconnected the Ethernet cable and SE updated itself successfully and ran a whole-machine scan.

That was last night. This morning, upon booting, everything was running and seemed to be fine.

And from my Windows XP 32-bit laptop, the same outcome. MSE 4 successfully upgraded (over MSE 2.1), and working just fine. No installation issues.
