Windows 8 Metro: Now with mouse support!
Posted on January 27th, 2012 at 20:52 2 commentsBut the oddities show that Metro’s designed for fingers, not mice, and trying to use a mouse is going to get dicey.

The more I read about Windows 8 the more I think I will stay with my desktop PC, my mouse, and Windows 7. Ain’t broke; won’t fix it!

My solution to the Windows 8 Metro issue is just to
switch off Metro using the Start Menu Toggle utility:Then the GUI is very much like Windows 7. Later on, when the MEdia Center is added, and other online Apps become more interesting, if I want to use Metro for awhile (with my external multi-touch touchpad plugged into my USB Port) I can switch over with basically just a click of my mouse and a log out/ log in operation.
One strong reason for me to upgrade (eventually) will be Windows 8 handling of transfers of large files and complex folders. Compared with Windows 7, these transers (vai USB-2) can be up to four times faster under Windows 8 Developer Preview than under Windows 7 Home Premium on the same Toshiba Satellite laptop. That’s only one of the performance improvements I’ve noticed so far, but it is a big difference.
No need for Metro to take advantage of many of Windows 8’s improvements. If you don’t need Metro, just toggle it off. Problem solved.
