  • Black Tuesday is here – batten down the hatches

It’s that time again. Microsoft has released an amazing number of patches for this month’s Black Tuesday.

The usual advice applies: make sure Windows/Microsoft Automatic Update is turned off, and wait while we see the effects of all of the patches.

I’m moving us up to MS-DEFCON 2: Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.

    1. Hi Woody, thanks for keeping my PC safe. As others I received the 10 new updates. I do not use or have Office. Are there any of these updates we could just get rid of and not bother with them in the future? thanks.

If you received notifications about updates to Office, Windows Update has detected something on your machine that requires the updates. You may have an old Office document viewer, for example.

The only way to get rid of the updates is to get rid of whatever program(s) require the updates. Easier said than done, I know.

    3. So I don’t know if I’m supposed to say it elsewhere so I’ll say it here. After the update my computer’s RAM usage from startup has increased from around 45% of 3 GB to 70%. Is there a way to fix this without doing a system restore?

Which update are you talking about?

    5. The ten most recent updates. I believe they were released on the 13th.

    6. Woody – Along with the normal black tuesday offerings, I was offered a patch to update Microsoft Security Essentials to version 4.2.223.1. Thoughts on whether to wait on this patch (along with the rest of the updates) or download the MSE update immediately and let the rest of the updates fester for a while?

    7. Hi Woody,i can’t get security update for Microsoft .NET Framework (KB2789642 and KB2789643) to install on my XP machine, error code: 0×641.

Do you happen to know if is this happening to people other than me? TIA

That’s a common error code for .NET patch install failure.

If I were you, I’d wait for a few weeks, and see if Microsoft fixes it. There’s nothing immediately important in the .NET patches. So let it slide for a while, and see what happens.

Updating MSE is always a good idea. Let the others fester. (Good term, BTW.)

    10. Well, i’ll follow your advice, Woody…thanks so much for your time!

    11. BTW, for Windows 8 (IE 10) the Flash Player Update comes through MS Updates. This is needed now. It also wouldn’t hurt to run the current MSRT update.

    12. No trouble with patch (up to date) but I don’t update my .Net framework

    13. I find it interesting that yesterday “Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)” was listed as an ‘Important’ and today it’s ‘Optional’ or did I imagine yesterday? :-)
