Hard to believe, but true. Lotus 1-2-3 turned 30 over the weekend.

    1. Dan Bricklin has a copy of Visicalc that can be downloaded if anyone wants to experience what the original spreadsheet program was like; do a search for “VisiCalc Executable”. I taught Visicalc for a brief time (running on CP/M-86, no less) followed by Lotus 1-2-3 (on an IBM-XT with a 10MB hard drive) for a longer period of time. I loved Lotus and I loved teaching it.

    2. I visited Redmond once…they had a place on the campus called “Lotus Falls”…. How’d THAT work out??

    3. It’s not hard for me to believe, I started using the DOS version 1 at work in the mid 80′s. Backslash..f..r..F3. Still use the ’97 version that came with the Aptiva I bought in ’97 with Win 95 on it. It was a big improvement!

    4. The best of them all was Multiplan, which ran on my Kaypro.

    5. I’ve read a lot of comments about 1-2-3 turning 30 but can’t find any site that is still offering solutions to problems. Yes, I still have some really important files that I use each week. Yes, I loved 1-2-3 when IBM bought it (retired employee 20 yrs ago) even though they did not do it any favors, and I still use it because of the macros that I did not want to try to convert.

I installed my 97 version on my newly installed hard drive. Checked the old files after installation and everything was fine. However, now I cannot open the files, …application has encountered a problem…error. I have uninstalled several times, made sure the registry did not have any Lotus stuff, etc. I can create new files with the 123 ext and I can open wks ext. Fails everytime I try to open the older 123 ext. Works perfect on my 2 laptops with most of the same programs installed.
I have been searching the web for several days to find a solution. Lots of comments about it being old, no comments about where to go to find help.

I know this is the wrong place to ask but grasping at straws. Any ideas?

I haven’t a clue. Have you tried the Lounge? Click on the link to ask a Windows or Office question, in the upper right corner of this page.
