  • Windows 10 S free upgrade to Pro extended until March 31, 2018

All of you Windows 10 S fans, gather round…

C’mon. There must be at least one of you.

Anyway, Microsoft has announced that Surface Laptops are now available in more colors, in more countries.

At the same time, they announced that the free upgrade offer (or maybe I should say “the ability to move from Windows 10 S mode, back to Pro”) has been extended by three months.

If any of you are seriously considering buying a Surface Laptop – or taking the plunge with Windows 10 S — we need to have a serious talk.

The fact that the free upgrade extension announcement came buried in one of the final paragraphs of an official blog post entitled “Surface Laptop colors arriving in additional countries” should give you a clue.

Do you think Consumer Reports would recommend red over, say, silver? 🙂

Teal, hands-down; unless one is of a certain age (or prefers the Retro look), in which case one of the popular Formica colors from the 1950s should pass CR muster.1950s-Color-Palette-1

What happens if you buy a budget OEM Win 10 S computer today, take the free upgrade to Win 10 Pro and later, ie after 31 March 2018, have to do an inplace Factory Reset or ‘out-place’ Reinstall of Win 10? … Will the Recovery be for Win 10 Pro or Win 10 S?

What if the free inplace upgrade to Win 10 Pro fails or could not complete?

Buyers of new OEM Win 10 computers are supposed to immediately create a System Image of the inboard Recovery Partition with the inbuilt OEM Recovery Backup Tool on a 16GB USB Flash-drive, since the OEMs no longer provide any Recovery/Install DVDs and COA Product Key with new Win 10/8.x computers. In this case, the System Image created from the Recovery Partition will likely be for Win 10 S, ie not for Win 10 Pro.
. . . So, after the free upgrade to Win 10 Pro, the buyers should immediately create a System Image for Win 10 Pro by using Macrium Reflect Free or Acronis True Image.

Once the Win10 Pro is installed and activated, it should be registered to that PC in the MS database. If the Win10 Pro is downloaded, it should then be reinstallable and activate automatically. Of late, the license key is on the chip on the motherboard, not on an external sticker.

The Restore disks made from the OEM Recovery partition will revert the PC to factory condition – Win10 S.

However, it is always prudent to make an image of the current system periodically, especially when making major changes.
