  • November 2018 non-Security Office Updates have been released

Posted on November 7th, 2018 at 06:47 PKCano Comment on the AskWoody Lounge

UPDATE: The reported bug, where installing these patches deletes the desktop version of OneNote, isn’t a bug at all. The bug was related to the September patches.

These are November 2018 Office updates. They are not included in the DEFCON-4 approval for the October patches. Unless you have a specific need to install them, you should wait until Susan Bradley (Patch Lady) approves them and any problems have been reported.

    Office 2010

Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB4461522)
Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2863821)

    Office 2013

Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB4461482)
Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB3178640)

    Office 2016

Update for Microsoft Office 2016 Language Interface Pack (KB4461475)
Update for Microsoft Office 2016 (KB4461505)
Update for Microsoft Office 2016 (KB4461438)
Update for Microsoft Office 2016 (KB4461474)
Update for Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 (KB4461502)
Update for Microsoft Visio 2016 (KB4461472)

There were no non-security listings for Office 2007 (which is out of support).
Office 365 and C2R are not included.
Security updates for all supported versions of Microsoft Office are released on the second Tuesday of the month (Patch Tuesday).

Hi – I’m on the OneNote team and I can confirm that this and future Office updates leave OneNote 2016 alone.

Hi, Tony. Thanks for the explanation.

Any idea why people are reporting that desktop OneNote is getting removed by one of the Office First Tuesday non-security patches?

Presumably it’s a bug – but I don’t see any correlation. Haven’t even been able to track down which KB is messing things up: No obvious culprits.

Sometimes reports like this are happenstance — a problem arises about the same time as updates arrive, and the updates get blamed. Sure wish I knew what was happening!

Hi Woody – that reddit post references a help article for an issue that happened in Sept. It’s not about the Nov. 2018 updates. Definitely let me know if you’re seeing something different. Thanks!

Just got a tweet from Mary Branscombe:

if the bug that uninstalls OneNote 2016 hits you, here is the official Microsoft support article telling you how to reinstall it

Simply hillarious. I especially liked the second tweet though:

This is a known issue that affects users on Microsoft Office releases prior to version 16.0.10730.20102, where an Office update may have caused OneNote 2016 to be automatically uninstalled for those users. ”

It has a nice ring to it.

Office 2019 seem missing in the above?

Or is this not formally available / released just yet?

      (I have it installed already)

The list is for traditional MSI Office
Office 2019 is Click-to-Run only, no MSI variant

Both kb4461522 (https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/help/4461522/november-6-2018-update-for-office-2010-kb4461522) and kb2863821 (https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/help/2863821/november-6-2018-update-for-office-2010-kb2863821) showed up in Windows Update yesterday, both labeled as important, but both unchecked. Did not install them (duh). What I find strange is they both seem to do the same thing.

      4461522:
This update makes some changes for the Japanese calendar in Office 2010 so that the new Japanese era name can be displayed correctly when a new era begins.

And I’m in The Netherlands; why is a Japanese calendar-update pushed as important?

The Office 2010 ones appear on my appropriate machine as Important but unchecked.
