    Microsoft is aware that some customers have reported that network drivers are intentionally uninstalled, then fail to reinstall after applying the May 8, 2018 update. This can result in the loss of network connectivity. Microsoft is presently investigating and will provide a status update when the investigation is complete.

      I had just approved 3712 earlier today. I didn’t realize it also had the nic issue. D’OH! I just went back and marked it as not approved. I guess I’ll find out if any pc still grabs it. 3718 remains not approved. Thanks Susan!

      I noticed that April’s patch forcefully uninstalled NIC drivers while I was watching the cmdline scroll.  I wonder how much they mucked with May’s rollup for it to run into this issue only a month later.

      Seems to not be an issue for me on Win7 with KB4103718 installed.

      What network drivers do they mean? Ethernet? Wi-Fi? Bluetooth? VPNs?

      Is installing an older version a solution?

      What about built-in network drivers that are included? They will keep installing and failing after you remove them?

      Why is Microsoft less and less descriptive? I swear there’s more technical stuff about Windows 98SE than Windows 10 on their pages…ok, that’s an exagerration 😛

        Maybe it helps to create a restore point before updating (if you do, same as I, update B-group style). One can, then, restore the system to its previous state before installing the problem patch, which I assume restores also the drivers this bad update did remove.

        …and as a side note, I, too have noticed the info on these situations getting less verbose over the years.

        I really do wish that, also, that “…and will provide a status update when the investigation is complete,” also included an estimated date when they think they’ll have a fix.  I mean, the second question I always got asked was, “OK, how long is it going to take to fix it?” (“Captain, I can’t get her going for at least three hours!” “I need it in 10 minutes.”” OK, OK, I’ll try and make it 20.” 🙂

        That’s a “known unknown” (groan), but anything might be helpful.

        Back to my wishing well.

        Why is Microsoft less and less descriptive?

        I’m imagining several reasons:

        1. They don’t want you being self-sufficient when they want to be firmly in charge of your computer.

        2. It’s much easier not to document something than to document it, and apparently no one in Microsoft management really cares any more.

      I am Group B Windows 7 64 bit and I don’t think May updates seem that important so I might bypass altogether. It ain’t broke so why mess with it theory.

      Win 7-64  Grp A — KB4103718 Rollup Inst’d BY ITSELF was the most UNeventful Update I’ve done in awhile. Previous Updates did not always show “Preparing to Update” or “Please wait – Preparing to Configure” – Just a Normal Re-Start sequence that sometimes requ’d multi-Re-Starts to make a sluggish computer smooth again; This ran like clock work.

      Also, I inexplicably had incurred an issue where  I could NOT clk the Right Arrow in an Explorer String to See that member’s Contents without seeing “Configuring Items” OR seeing the Green Loading bar in the Explorer Address bar IF I simply tried to Clk the Arrow in Explorer “Name Column” to Reverse the member positions. Cause or Coincidence – THAT issue is gone.

      Will Install remainder together, I think, asap. Dreading the day this machine must be Replaced. I don’t know HOW Win 10 users stay sane.

      I had a BSOD after installing this and the .NET update (4103718 and 4099633)!

      Rolled back. Will see if it falls over again..

        KB4103718 is not a .NET update. It is the 2018-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7

          I think what they meant was “after installing this (KB4103718) and the .NET update (KB4099633).”

            That’s correct, installing both at the same time!
            In hindsight, I should have installed only one of them at a time, of course.

            I have now uninstalled both, will wait a little while to see if there is further fallout, before trying again!

      Well, another month in 2018, and another potentially serious problem in a Windows 7 update. Why does a security update try to uninstall the Network driver and actively prevent its reinstallation? How can such a bug slip by undetected?

      Seems to me that my Windows 7 x64 systems will have to stay unpatched for at least another month.

      For me, it is obvious Microsoft now does little or no testing itself, and no longer cares about the quality of the security patches, ever since Nadella fired its testing department back in 2014. Otherwise how can problems that can have potentially serious consequences occur so regularly?

      Mr. Nadella, if your company no longer wants to keep to your promise of patching Windows 7 until January 2020, please just come out and say so. Why make users suffer with your half-hearted “support” and “fixes” repeatedly?

      Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

        Your plea resonates with me, and many others I’m sure. The difficulty of course is that openly admitting it creates an actionable liability; but willful voluntary incidental incompetence can be explained away.

      As suggested above After my Computer zipped along after JUST the May W7-64 Rollup KB4103718, it was Very Sluggish AFTER inst’ing the Remaining (9 total) ’10 Office, 4.71 Net Frmwk, and MSRT. Typical, too, a Re-Start Fixed That.

      All Seems well AND I’d Suggest one or two Re-Starts after a Post-Update problem as THAT has cured my ills more than you’d think.

      I rolled back my most used boxes to Dec 2017..was hoping May would be problem free so I could get up to date…looks like June or July. The patches are WAY MORE RISKY than the threats to someone who uses multi-layer anti-malware and practices safe computing, IMO.

      Recently switched to Quad9 security filtered DNS https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/11/New-Quad9-Dns-Service-Blocks-Malicious-Domains-For-Everyone/
      to help block the bad guys…no problems on 6 pc’s.

      I’ve duly tested install of both KB4103718  & KB4103712 with absolutely no network issues @ static IPs set but the issues of dwm.exe those I’m monthly reporting here from Jan2018 still persist and it’s confirmed to be beyond of NVidia drivers’ version and/or performance.

      P.S. I believe we need an update of Desktop & Session Manager Service to be adjusted to perform in new messy environment of Spectre/Meltdown etc protection, and a proper way of heap management.

      Hi folks,

      seen laptop with crippled WLAN, Win7 64bit, group A style, right after 05 update KB4103718 repeatedly trying to finish update (4 restarts), and the result as described by MS.

      Atheros AR5BWB222, Acer TravelMate P253M. Driver reinstall helped.

        NIC problems exist in KB4103718/KB4103712. Wait for change of MS Defcon to 3 or above.

        Your safest bet is to wait until Woody changes the MS-DEFCON level to 3 (at the top of each page). We are currently at level 2 as of 15th May. (patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don’t do it.)

      So this is Win7 SP1, x64 Intel Haswell processor; consistently Woody group B. Re: 5-2018 Security only KB4103712: Has anyone considered making use of the April 2018 revision of KB4099950, used for apparently-similar problem in April, in connection with the May update? Would probably have to do as I did installing one of the Mar./April updates: Un-install 4099950 since it was already on my PC; then re-install it prior to running the security-only May patch. Has anyone done this for May? Do any of the Senior posters on this blog (you know who you are) have any thoughts as to whether this might alleviate the NIC/network/whatever bug? (FYI: On the csv. file contents list for May’s 4103712, I checked it about ten days ago and it listed — I thought — a pci.sys, which was same version V.6.1.7601.24056 as I already have on my PC; When I checked file list off of Web again today, pci.sys was *not* listed. Guess this updating must be making me cross-eyed, or something.)

      With KB4103718, my Win7 64 SP1 wasn’t able to connect to a distant PC through RDP anymore. After uninstalling it, it worked again.
