  • AskWoody Plus Newsletter 16.1.0 – Now open under old management

Posted on January 14th, 2019 at 08:19 woody Comment on the AskWoody Lounge

We’ve just sent out the first AskWoody Plus Newsletter to Plus Members.

For a limited time (which is to say, until we get the hooks built into this web site), everybody can take a look, even if you haven’t signed up for Plus Membership. Mosey on over here to see:

Tracey Capen‘s welcome, and a description of how we’re rebuilding Windows Secrets Newsletter from the ground up.

Woody’s Windows Watch which asks whether you’d be willing to pay for a monthly subscription to Windows. It’s a complex question. What do you think?

Fred Langa’s LangaList with down-to-earth answers to questions about Windows activation keys, a dying hard drive, and Microsoft Office alternatives. Have questions? Answers? Check out the discussion here.

Susan Bradley’s Patch Watch proudly nominates Windows 10 version 1803 as the buggiest version of Windows ever — quite a distinction. There’s also a full rundown of all the latest patches, what’s broken, and what’s still limping along. Join the discussion here.

For those of you who used to read Windows Secrets Newsletter, that should sound like a familiar roll call. The world has changed since the old team last appeared, and the new AskWoody Plus Newsletter takes it all in stride, dishing out help and ministrations without kowtowing to the folks in Redmond.

I’m amazed at how far this team has come in less than six weeks. It’s all rough around the edges, and there are numerous glitches driving me nuts, but the foundation is solid and our intentions are noble.

If you like it, sign up for an AskWoody Plus Membership. Remember that we work on the donation model — you pay as much as you think it’s worth. (And you can always donate again!)

I received the email twice.  you appear to have both of my email addresses.  I don’t see anywhere I can fix this, so can you please remove the comcast address and use only the gmail address?

      thanks

Whatever happened to Mr. Gray-shirt, Lance Whitney, who went down with the ship after P***** destroyed the old Windows Secrets?

Thanks for the hard work Woody et al. It’s nice to see the newsletter with all the familiar people posting articles again. 🙂

Hopefully the problem of my 2 user names and passwords will be solved between WS & AW as you move forward and merge completely.

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

Sure was a pleasant surprise to see the newsletter in my email inbox. It’s deja-vu all over again. Thanks everyone for all the hard work and contributions.

Sorry to be a little dense, but do I understand Tracey Capen correctly:

AskWoody.com will still be this site and separate from AskWoody Plus Membership newsletter which will be delivered via email?

AskWoody.com will still allow anyone to view and post Anonymously or (preferred) via Registration to this site?

AskWoody Plus Membership requires a separate signup (and donation), but Registration will also be good for AskWoody.com?

Further question for those who may not have the time or want to devote the time to the Newsletter, can a donation still be given to support AskWoody.com?

Looks good! I’ll be looking forward to do some good reading every Monday morning.

Thanks for all the hard work you put into this: Woody, Tracey, Fred and Susan (in no particular order – all worked equally hard I’m sure.)

Woody and your faithful collaborators, I’m liking the merged site more and more, but I cannot conceive of the amount of hard work that it represents.  A heartfelt thank you to you, Woody, and many others.

I liked that “anonymous” did not post on WSL, and also liked that posters were encouraged to say where they were from.  I’m proud to announce that I am from Edinburgh.  Others whom I enjoy reading are from (to quote from recent WSL threads, and in no particular order as I collect them) Oxfordshire UK; South Glos, UK; Las Vegas, NV; Olympia, WA; Earth (OK, Paul T!); Calgary, AB; St Louis, MO; PA, USA (Maudibe!); Manning, SC; Yarra Glen, VIC; Paducah, KY; Marietta, GA; Canberra, ACT; Burnaby, BC; Melbourne, VIC; Indy; “Old Hampshire”; Praha; Surrey, UK; Bradford, UK; Austin metro area, TX; Sun Prairie, WI; USA (OK, mrjimphelps!); Cyprus; La Jolla, CA; Newcazzle, UK; Polk County, FL; Cardiff, UK; Pittsford, NY; Fort McMurray, AB; Mojave Desert, CA; Durham, UK; and “a cultural area in S W England”.

I trust that you will recognise yourselves, and hope that I have not overlooked anyone important.  What is interesting is that the names of the posters from the above places on WSL appear so often as the final name in the thread, i.e. the poster who implicitly “solved” the thread, even if the OP did not mark it thus.

Without success, I hoped to convince those who ran WSL that posters could be persuaded to “de-anonymise” their locations, but I do not think that I got past “persuaded”.

      Yay!

The only downside: I had to create a new local folder in my desktop email client so I can save the newsletters for future reference. Yes, I know, life is tough.. 😉
