  • More signs of intelligent life in Redmond — MS releases a Win10 1809 cumulative update preview into the Preview Ring

Posted on January 11th, 2019 at 06:14 woody Comment on the AskWoody Lounge

This is the second time in three years that MS has used the Windows Inside Preview Ring in precisely the way it was originally created.

    Bravo and huzzah!

Details in Computerworld Woody on Windows.

Huh, I thought that’s what they’d been doing all along, using Insiders to test fixes and upcoming versions. How is what they are doing now since November, different from what they’d been doing up until last summer?

This is specifically about the Release Preview ring for the current version, not Fast or Slow Ring Insiders testing the next version.

Thanks. Let me be more specific, then:  🙂

What has changed since last summer in the way MS uses the Release Preview ring?

Woody covers this in his ComputerWorld article.

Maybe I didn’t sleep well enough last night, but I’ve read Woody’s article twice and I can’t find where he describes how it used to be done prior to November. I see where he says that they’re now doing it right, but I don’t see a description of how they were doing it wrong before. Can you pinpoint where in the CW article Woody says this?

MS was not using it for testing prior to last November, not sure if it was used at all.

It was occasionally used as a last-minute beta version of the next version of Windows.

This is the way it should be used — to preview upcoming cumulative updates.

              Big difference.

I give them a few more months before MS goes back to old habits. The fundamental problem is the lack of internal testing which only MS can truly fix.

Neither of those issues occur for me with that update installed five days ago.

“Version 2” of KB4476976 for 1809 was issued to the Release Preview ring yesterday. (Just updated to build 17763.292 here.)

Release Preview gets neither the KB article of a Release nor the blog entry of a Preview, so who knows what has changed?
