  • February 2020 Office non-Security Updates have been released

Posted on February 4th, 2020 at 13:49 PKCano Comment on the AskWoody Lounge

The February 2020 non-Security Office updates have been released Tuesday, February 4, 2020. They are not included in the DEFCON-3 approval for the January 2020 patches. Unless you have a specific need to install them, you should wait until Susan Bradley (Patch Lady) approves them and any problems have been reported.

Remember, Susan’s patching sequence and  recommendations are based on a business environment that has IT support and may have time constraints on the updating process. Consumer patching should be more cautious due to limited technical and mechanical resources. The latter is the reason for the AskWoody DEFCON system.

    Office 2016
Update for Microsoft Project 2016 (KB4484253)
Update for Microsoft Word 2016 (KB4484249)

There were no non-security listings for Office 2007 (which is out of support), Office 2010, or Office 2013.

Updates are for the .msi version (persistent). Office 365 and C2R are not included.

Security updates for all supported versions of Microsoft Office are released on the second Tuesday of the month (Patch Tuesday).

  • Admins note: Microsoft delays promised changes to LDAP channel binding

If you don’t know an LDAP channel from a Disney channel, you can safely ignore this missive.

Microsoft originally promised that it would change LDAP channel binding and LDAP signing to more-secure configurations via a patch in January. Then, in December, it said the patch had been pushed back to March.

Today, MS just announced that the dreaded patch has been pushed back again, this time until sometime in the second half of the year:

Windows Updates in March 2020 add new audit events, additional logging, and a remapping of Group Policy values that will enable hardening LDAP Channel Binding and LDAP Signing. The March 2020 updates do not make changes to LDAP signing or channel binding policies or their registry equivalent on new or existing domain controllers.

A further future monthly update, anticipated for release the second half of calendar year 2020, will enable LDAP signing and channel binding on domain controllers configured with default values for those settings.

  • KB 4532695, the “optional, non-security, C/D Week” patch for Win10 versions 1903 or 1909 doesn’t do much

I was hoping to see a fix for the long-documented Win10 File Explorer Search bug. Nope.

I was also hoping for a fix to the latest IE JScript bug. (Yes, I know it’s asking too much to get a security fix in a non-security patch, but still…) Nope.

That said, KB 4532695 isn’t the monster that some have made it out to be.

Details in Computerworld Woody on Windows.

UPDATE: Mayank Parmar, who’s rapidly becoming one of my favorite reporters, has a new article in Windows Latest about KB 4532695 breaking internet connectivity on some machines, and sound problems on others.
