Patch Lady Podcast – reminder backup your Windows 7
Posted on February 9th, 2020 at 23:00 Comment on the AskWoody LoungeThis will be the first week we get to try out the brand spanking new Windows 7 security patches in the new post patching era. Just a reminder to have a GOOD backup before installing these updates. If you haven’t tested restoring your system from whatever backup you have made, make sure you have all the necessary parts to do so. Meaning if your backup software needs a bootable flash drive, have that ready. If you have to hit a F2 or F8 or Escape key to get the system into boot from flash drive, know what combo you need to get into that.

And of course hold back a bit until I’ve had a chance to test the install of the updates and make sure everything is okay.

Are you running Win10 version 1903? Could you check something out for me?
Posted on February 9th, 2020 at 11:14 Comment on the AskWoody LoungeI have three bare-metal Win10 version 1903 machines.
None of them is showing the KB 4532695 “optional, non-security, C/D Week” patch for Win10 versions 1903 and 1909. I’ve only seen screenshots of that optional update being made available (“Download and install now”) on 1909 machines.
If you’re running Win10 1903 (type “winver” in the Search box), could you check and see if the optional update appears for you? Click Start > Settings > Update & Security. You should see it on the right.
Thanks!

Remember Microsoft’s plan to give you more control over driver updates? Yeah? No.
Posted on February 9th, 2020 at 07:35 Comment on the AskWoody LoungeMayank Parmar over on Windows Latest posted a short epitaph for the anticipated new Windows Update feature:
Back in 2019, Microsoft announced it would add ‘Optional updates’ option to Windows Update settings page. Microsoft said new Optional updates page will let you manage improvements for optional updates such as drivers, monthly feature updates, and non-security patches released every month.
It looks like Microsoft has changed its mind and new Optional updates setting won’t arrive in Windows 10’s upcoming 20H1 update [a.k.a., Win10 version 2004].
Looks like it got pulled with no notice to Win10 version 2003 beta testers. Instead, the announcement’s part of the release notes for Windows 10 20H2 Build 19536, the beta version that went out December 16, 2019
Think of it as a preview to Microsoft’s promised “we’ll stick everything in the Fast Ring but don’t expect it to ship” service.
