      Vicki,

Ok, there are two possibilities that I can think of that might be causing your problem.

      1. I’m running Win 8.1 Pro if you have 8.1 Standard it may not allow you to hide updates.
You can check your OS version via File Explorer -> Right-Click on Computer (in left hand pane) -> Select Properties
      41312-Win81pro
      2. I’m running an Administrator account if you are using a Standard User account this could also possibly preclude you being able to hide updates.

      HTH

I have a Standard account and have had no problems hiding updates, off out now but will have another look in a few hours.

      Vicki,

I just disabled StartIsBack and tested on std Win 8.1. If you got to the desktop, right-click the start icon, select Control Panel then Windows Update you can hide updates with a right click. HTH

      Woody,

These are the updates I was offered, with notes from me:

      1. Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2719857)
You cannot use an USB RNDIS device to connect to a 3G or 4G network in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
      ME: I DON’T USE A 3G OR 4G NETWORK WITH MY LAPTOP.

      2. Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2735855)
Network connection is slow when you run a WFP-based application on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
ME: I USE A WIRELESS ROUTER FOR FREE INTERNET IN MY BUILDING, BUT AM NOT ON A NETWORK. DOES THIS APPLY TO ME?

      3. Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2741355)
You cannot start Windows Movie Maker 2012 when a graphics card that only supports DirectX 9 is installed on a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer
      ME: I DON’T HAVE/USE WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER.

      4. Update Rollup for ActiveX Killbits for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2736233)

      5. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 – September 2012 (KB890830)

      QUESTIONS:

      a. Should I disregard/hide updates #’s 1-3?

      b. Should we all avoid #4 until we hear more if there is a problem (as reported by another poster)?

I’m going to install #5 while I wait to hear back on the rest. Thanks, Woody!

Thanks, will do. I have made it a habit to Hide Updates I don’t need.

I have W-7. At every start-up, it keeps saying I have two new updates, namely SP1 and IE9. I do not want to install those at this time. In the past, I was able to hide such updates. This time, I cannot find such an option. Can someone help?

JACKPOT!!! Thank you so much! I have been clicking Cancel after the previous steps, so I never got the Hide Updates box. It will be great to get rid of that notification and shield! I had forgotten how to get to that option.

    • #1269852

This may be worth a try …
Right click the shield, in the bottom of the next window will be choices Download and Cancel, uncheck the update box and Download will change to Close, click on Close and a new Hide Updates box will appear, check the box next to Don’t notify me….., then click on OK

Be sure to click on Close not on Cancel!!!

Thank you very much, Clint and Roderunner, for the information each provided. Unfortunately, I do have WLM 2011, and I don’t have enough ‘computer savvy’ to hide updates, etc. Also, I saw some information, elsewhere, that the older versions of WLM are very difficult, maybe impossible, to find now.

As suspected, I won’t be able to send any Christmas music with my Christmas greeting this year – unless I add the music as an attachment. Therefore, as my grandchildren would say, “Bummer!”

I wonder why this feature was stripped from the latest version of WLM – but no use to fret over that now. I may have to find another email program, and I agree with you Roderunner, the 2011 version is NOT user friendly.

Clint, I have PowerPoint, but I don’t know much about it, either, and I don’t have time to learn how to create a slideshow, etc. before Christmas. But, thanks for this suggestion.

Thanks again to both of you for taking time to assist me. I appreciate this very much.

Ruth, if you can, completely remove 2011 WLM using CCleaner (tools menu) then use registry cleaner (clean all, it’s safe to use) then use the cleaner function. reboot.

There is an option to hide updates which are irrelevant or not wanted by right clicking on the unwanted update(s) from the list of updates available. Once hidden they never appear again unless you click on the option to restore hidden updates from the list of options on the left side of the updates window. I have done that with all of the language packs they try to give you (34 of them).

This is what I was looking for – I have to click on the first link that appears and then the option to hide them is available.

Thanks – I’m not quite used to Win7 yet.

      Bill,

Because you have Access XP installed, Office Update will continue to show ALL of the available updates for Office XP (including Word, Excel, Web Services, etc.). I also had this “problem” on a computer which had Office 2003 as well as Access XP installed. There is nothing you can do about this.

The Windows Update site allows you to ‘personalize Windows Update’ so that you can hide updates which you do not need or do not want. Unfortunately, the Office Update site does not offer this option. I think you are doomed to view these unnecessary updates each time you connect to Office Update.
