Thank you Susan for your update and the link to blockapatch.com. I viewed the YTube vid also. As a W8.1 consumer user with UEFI/SecureBoot enabled I’m following your tip to hide the update for now. W8.1 makes it easy to hide updates, as you know. I do not like to install updates for the sake of Microsoft publishing them thus your input is valuable to me and others in making the decision. Certainly if there becomes a need for this update then I’ll download/install. Bottom line is we appreciate your help.

AskWoody PlusAugust 21, 2022 at 10:42 am #2471705I am currently running Windows 10 HOME 21H1. When I run wushowhide, it works perfectly except it always downloads any Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework before I can hide it. The “Preview” update seems to ignore wushowhide, I then have to wait for it to install and then I manually have to uninstall the update, which takes a considerable amount of time installing/uninstalling. It there something I am doing wrong with wushowhide. Besides the preview update, wushowhide works perfectly.
I follow PKCano instructions shown below.
Thank you for any assistance.
INSTRUCTIONS THAT I FOLLOW:
- DO system image before updating anything
- Make sure when you last log off the computer, you are on metered connection.
- Boot computer with metered connections on.
- After computer boots up, Click on shortcut “WUSHOWHIDE” but DO NOT OPEN the file yet!!
- Click on Settings/Update & Security — Click on “Resume Updates” — Immediately run wushowhide & Under Advanced make sure to uncheck auto fix.
- Hide whatever updates you do not want.
- Close WUSHOWHIDE
- Open Services
- Highlight Windows Update Service
- “DISABLE” ——– “APPLY” ——- “STOP” the service (upper left)
- “RESTART” the computer — >>>>>>> [DO NOT SHUTDOWN or BOOTUP]
- Open Services
- Highlight Windows Update Service
- Set to “MANUAL”
- “APPLY” ———->> >>>>>>>> [DO NOT START THE SERVICE]
- “CLOSE” the services.
- Click on the shortcut for WUSHOWHIDE, open the file and immediately run WUSHOWHIDE >>>>>>>> Under Advanced make sure to uncheck auto fix.
- Verify that the updates are hidden, then verify they are not available to be hidden.
- On the left screen, click on Settings
- Open Update & Security and “PAUSE FOR 7 DAYS” updates again
- Then immediately “RESUME”
- Click out of settings.
- Open Settings AGAIN
- In WUSHOWHIDE — Unhide updates that you want to install then hit NEXT, then close.
- Click on Updates and Security
- Click on “Check for Updates” [should not get the hidden updates]
- Once you see that only the downloads you want are showing
- Turn off metered connections

I have been running WUSHOWHIDE using the directions shown below. However, when I get to step #4, after I click on “Resume Updates” and immediately run wushowhide, Windows Update has already started downloading the .Net Framework 3.5. Wushowhide hides all the other updates I do not want, but it does not even provide a chance to hide the .Net Framework. Am I missing a step in the directions to stop the download of the .Net Framework? Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 8, 2022 at 3:28 pm #2430239My Windows 10 Pro version is 21H1 and OS Build is 19043.1237
What are the other Settings in Group Policy that defers updates ?? What are the steps to get to those Settings ? I should check what they are set to.
Just to clarify that question, I’m not using now or in my few months old of a Past with Win 10 & No to when PC was on Win 7. Also, No ever using using any other 3rd party software or Windows Update Sites to block updates. Also, I have never even downloaded or installed WUMgr. I have only used wushowhide to hide Updates.
-Oh so, when you asked, “Have you used wushowhide to hide the Cumulative Updates in addition to KB 5005463 and KB 4023057?”
You didn’t mean that I needed to also hide the Feb. Cumulative Update (KB5019342) and the .Net Cumulative Update (KB5008876). Instead you were asking, if I had also hidden these updates.
I didn’t know that hiding the wrong Updates might cause the “Pause Updates” Text to be already greyed out when I got to the step of Click Pause Once…
*I haven’t checked today, to see if March Updates have appeared in WU queue list.*

AskWoody PlusFebruary 26, 2022 at 6:49 am #2427884Start computer with metered connection setting ON. *Next step to be performed if update is required before the pause period has expired
Disconnect from internet, then under Settings / Update & Security / Resume Updates. (You’ll receive an ‘error’ message, just ignore) Reconnect internet.
Immediately run wushowhide (Advanced / uncheck ‘Apply repairs automatically’ box).
Hide updates you don’t want.
Open Services / Windows Update. Right click for Properties window to appear and set Startup type to Disabled. Apply. Stop the service and then close window.
Restart computer.
Open Services / Windows Update and set startup type to Manual. DO NOT start the service, close window.
Open wushowhide (again unchecking box) and check that the updates have been hidden. Close and run again to verify that they are not present in the ‘Hide updates’ section.
Go to Settings / Update & Security.
Click Check for updates or Retry (if previously disconnected from internet)
Now the updates that you want will appear in the queue list
Go back to Settings / Network & Internet and select Properties for your connection. There you can turn OFF the metered connection toggle switch. This will allow all available updates to immediately download and install.
Before the Restart ensure that metered connection is toggled back to ON. Leave this setting as is for subsequent startups.
Go to Settings / Windows Update / Advanced options and select a future date to pause updates once again until the next patching cycle starts again (as per Susan’s recommendations)
Cheers

AskWoody PlusJanuary 27, 2022 at 1:27 pm #2421608Hello all. I use wushowhide to hide updates offered each month until DEFCON is 3 or higher.
Used unhide on KB5008876 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64 and KB5009543 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems on 1/26/2022.
KB5008876 installed no problems.
KB5009543 was not offered by WU on 1/26 or today 1/27. Made sure it no longer appeared in hidden list of wushowhide. Does not appear in hide list either. Is it safe to assume Microsoft has withdrawn KB5009543 from WU due to issues?

AskWoody PlusJanuary 6, 2022 at 1:21 pm #2410839I had supposed that I would do that by first allowing it in the Group Policy Editor,
You are on Pro version so there is no need to pause updates as you have the option in GP to set the system to ‘notify = 2’ which will notify about new updates but WON’T download or install until you choose so.
If you want more control to select or hide updates you should use WUmgr (replacing Windows Update system).Askwoody updates advisory is split into two : home users and business users.
The mail server bug/fix effects business users. Its time to install 21H2 and Dec. updates.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 28, 2021 at 12:36 pm #2398455Yes, it is unfortunate that WuMgr and similarly wushowhide do not identify which updates are optional (as is now the case with WU). I usually check here on AskWoody or read the KB articles to figure out which updates are optional (except for preview updates that – as far as I understand – are always optional).
Before switching entirely to WuMgr for the updates, I kept my connection as metered and used WuMgr only to hide updates, but I was sick of having WU automatically install some patches (e.g. KB4023057) without regard for the metered connection setting.
In principle, you could let WU do its thing with metered connection enabled, see what is offered, and then use WuMgr to hide updates. However, this does not work well when patches are already in the WU queue (i.e. waiting for the ok to download), since hiding those patches will no longer prevent WU from offering them (unless you clear the WU queue) and in at least one case something went really wrong and both WuMgr and WU later failed to install an update that was hidden in WuMgr while WU was waiting the ok to download and then unhidden. I found that the best way to avoid this kind of issues was to scan for updates with WuMgr (or wushowhide) on Patch Tuesdays before updates are offered through WU, but of course this again means having to figure out which updates are optional without relying on WU.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 9, 2021 at 3:25 pm #2388789okay okay, I have to admit I’ve been stubborn! I resisted downloading wumgr bc i don’t like downloading anything from the internet these days ; ) but, after repeated suggestions (and checking the exe on VT, Defender and MBAM) to do that, I did. I searched for updates and lo & behold – August update is in there. With Defender and MSRT! I know I can use this to hide updates too in the future. Thanks everyone! Donna

GuestAugust 31, 2021 at 4:43 pm #2387034Did you try to disconnect/reconnect to your network?
Please try the network and Windows Update troubleshooters they may find and fix a fault somewhere. (Settings>Update & Security>Troubleshoot)
Open an elevated Administrator PowerShell prompt and type SFC /Scannow to check the integrity of your Windows 10 system.
If that does not work you may have to try resetting windows update. And also if you hide updates with the wushowhide tool they will need to be hidden again.

ManagerJune 28, 2021 at 2:12 pm #2374329You can uninstall 4023057 if you choose. From the Control Panel (Windows Health). You will just get it again next time it’s released.
Otherwise, you can just leave the updates. You can try Metered connections again next month. Sometimes they don’t prevent download of small (size) updates and I think both were small this month.
Download wushowhide.diagcab (linked in AKB2000016) or WUMgr and use them to hide the updates you want that Metered connections manage to stop. (You won’t be able to use either to hide updates as long as Pause is set).Another option is to download the updates from the catalog when they are released and manually install them when you aare ready. I believe they will install while Pause is engaged, or offline otherwise.

ManagerJune 26, 2021 at 8:19 am #2373693The only Microsoft page I could find where they haven’t recently eliminated a link to the wushowhide.diagcab file is this Technet article:
The “Download the troubleshooter from the Microsoft Download Center” link there does now work for the revised file.
(The size is up by a couple of KB from the 45.5 mentioned there to 47.2. And I don’t know why they would say it gets automatically saved to C:\Users\Admin\Downloads, when it really goes to your default downloads folder like anything else.)
