I am Win10/Pro. I have just moved from version 1909 to 20H2 by changing TRV to 20H2.   It took about 2 hours from start to finish.  This feature update sent 2021-02 KB4601050 (CU for .NET 3.5 & 4.8) to the WU queue, which I have hidden.  About a month ago, I installed the 1909 edition of this update (KB4601056).  Do I need to install this 20H2 edition?  Or does the previous 1909 installation take care of it?

      Win10 20H2 is a different version than Win10 1909.
1903/1909 have the same base, 2004/20H2 have the same base.
You reinstalled Windows – a different version.
The KB numbers are not even the same.

Yes, I know that the KB numbers are not the same. And I know the two bases are different. But, I thought it could be possible that whatever the 1909 patch did, it wouldn’t be undone when 20H2 was installed and therefore, it wouldn’t require that the 20H2 patch that does the same thing be installed.

But, it looks like that reasoning doesn’t fly here. You might say then that a completely new Feature Update (such as 20H1, 21H1, 22H1) creates amnesia about what went on before?

But, an enablement package (20H2, 21H2, 22H2) picks up from where its precursor left off (i.e., no amnesia)?

          not exactly WCHS

when you upgrade from 1909 (build 18363.x) to 20H2 (build 19042.x) either thru WU or ISO install media, you are actually doing a FULL OS upgrade, and thus the updates from a previous Windows version are NOT retained and you must install new updates for the new Windows version.

FYI – 21H2 is NOT in an enablement package form as that has been confirmed to be a BIG major version release coming this fall 2021

on the other hand, if you were to upgrade from 2004/20H1 to either 20H2 or 21H1 (NOT 21H2 and beyond), the updates that were installed for 2004 may be saved or retained.

” But, I thought it could be possible that whatever the 1909 patch did, it wouldn’t be undone when 20H2 was installed and therefore, it wouldn’t require that the 20H2 patch that does the same thing be installed.”

that’s correct, WCHS. by upgrading from 1909 (build 18363.x) to 20H2 (build 19042.x) either by thru Windows Update or thru 20H2 ISO install media, you are changing Windows versions (or doing a FULL OS upgrade) and will NOT retain the updates for the older Windows version.

      KB4601056 is for 1909 only
KB4601050 is for 2004/20H2 only (and possibly for 21H1)

and stop mentioning about the 21H2 & 22H2 versions as I know for sure that 21H2 is a BIG feature update version that is NOT in the form of an enablement package
