Just realized that one of the things the update to 20H2 from 1909 did is enable some background apps that were not enabled previously. Maybe not even in the background apps list.

Are any of the following recommended to enable in the background or not? Bonus points for why 🙂

SETTINGS are always running. I can’t think of why. If I click settings, should run but why in the background?

CORTANA I do not believe I even have Cortana installed!  I did try to run it, it says Cortana is disabled. Good! So do I need it in the background?

        Get Help in the background?

        MAPS?

        Snip and Sketch?

        Voice Recorder?

        iTunes?

NOW, the following seems logical to me to have enabled:

        • Alarms and Clock
        • Mail and Calendar
        • Microsoft News (I have alerts set)
        • Tips
        • Weather
        • Windows Security

        Thoughts?

        Thoughts.
Apps running in the background use your computer’s resources/bandwidth.

The Apps, in this case, are the built-in tile Apps (if you look at the list). How many of them do you use as opposed to third-party programs (not listed)?

They should run when you click on them. Do you need them running all the time?

          Exactly my questions!

An aside: the 20H2 update replaced my Apple installed version of iTunes with the Microsoft Store Version. So far seems the same with one exception of not finding an iPad on the network. But how damn intrusive!

I’m sure that is why that is now running in the background.

More as I find it and welcome other insights into background apps.

As I have said elsewhere, I loathe feature updates 🙂

Hmm, @PKCANO, why am I awaiting moderation?

Did you submit/edit/submit too fast? or is it the use of the d… word violating site rules (see under bottom of thread)? 🙂

If I were you, I would uninstall that iTunes from the Store (using PowerShell or Command Prompt) and download the REAL iTunes from Apple. The Store App may not give you the same results – there have been reports…

Hmm, still not up. And not too fast nor an edit.

I had the REAL  iTunes. I would never figure out all my settings and syncs if I changed. For now seems to work with the exception fo finding the iPad over the network. I have to plug directly in via USB.

            Bothers me though.

        OK, working through these.

        Disabled in Background Apps:

        • iTunes
        • Snip and Sketch
        • CORTANA
        • MAPS

        Enabled in background apps:

        • Alarms and Clock
        • Mail and Calendar

        Undecided yet:

        • SETTINGS
        • Get Help
        • Voice Recorder
        • Tips
        • Windows Security

I welcome opinions on the Undecided Five 🙂

        Decided to disable these three:

        1. Voice Recorder
        2. Get Help
        3. Tips

Still on the fence on security and  settings. Not sure what either would be doing in the background.

You can uninstall all Microsoft Store apps (leave Store app installed) with Portable Windows 10 Apps Manager

I use O&O Shutup10 to prevent most of these things.

Sure, but might want them. Just do not want them running in the background.

I removed everything except for the store app (needed for iCloud downloads).

IF/When you want then the same app will re-install.
