For posters add a delete button besides the edit button.

We had one, under an earlier software version. This was abused by a handful of Loungers, who wrecked threading by deleting posts that had been replied to, creating numerous unreadable topics.

In the meantime, the software has had a number of software updates, and the current settings aren’t very flexible. If you require to delete a post, report it, for moderator review.

The button could be implemented again, but so it is only available to be used during the short time allowed for making changes using the “Edit” button. Edits can change considerably the meaning of a comment, so allowing the total removal can be considered also as “editing”. The benefit will be to the commentator, so it will not be embarrassed by having something incorrect put in unstoppable circulation, and will also reduce the work of the MVPs that have to consider whether or not to delete the posted comment upon request.

But what about any answers to the comment that might have made before it was deleted?

First of all, it is unlikely to have replies in the short time available between the initial submission of the comment and its deletion. But even if someone is quick enough to reply within such a limited interval, the same practice that generally applies now to deleted comments with replies can be followed.

That is not a stock-standard setting currently available to us…

Kirsty: Just keep it in mind. Things sometimes change, even here.

Also, after I submitted the entry just above yours, today, the name of the topic of this thread never appeared anywhere in the right-side bar of the page, announcing it had received a new comment. Already yesterday, this happened to me with this same thread. There was a gap in the listed entries around the time when I submitted mine, so others that posted something elsewhere in that interval might have had the same problem.

This looks like a new bug. So now that I’ve told you and you know as well, please pass it on to those in charge of fixing bugs.

One possible workaround for the lack of a Delete button, and which would preserve message nesting integrity, might be for the contributor wishing to delete their post to Edit it and erase the whole message, replacing it perhaps with a notation such as “Deleted by poster”.

This of course doesn’t address the situation where a reply has already been posted, but at least readers of the thread would have a clue as to what just happened, instead of scratching their heads as would be the case if the post were deleted altogether.

      Just my $0.02.

Cybertooth: That is not a bad idea. Keeping in mind that, while the text can be deleted by its writer, the title of  the thread can only be deleted by one of the subset of MVPs with moderating superpowers. So the coven of those super-MVPs has to be notified anyways, for one of them to fly over and delete something (the title), the same as in the case when nothing has been erased.

Otherwise there will always be people that will see the title listed in the right hand side brown bar, get curious enough to go see what it is all about, find nothing there, and start commenting again, and again, and again, and again, and again… about the mystery empty thread.
