In the last week, 3 of my Win 10 machines updated to 1909 build 187362.900, and now all 3 play loud  ads (from time to time) before starting a FreeCell game.  (I use FreeCell to keep from going crazy waiting for Windows to do stuff that shouldn’t take forever, but does.)  I guess I’ve been lucky:  a Google search seems to be telling me that others have been experiencing this for awhile. Is there any way to stop this annoying new (to me, anyway) behavior?

Make a bet that you are really missing the old Window 7 games… and the package includes FreeCell. No ads.

If you are using Windows 10’s own firewall this video could help you. Solitaire will complain about no internet access, but it will still work.

In every Win 10 version upgrade, M$ has wiped my old Windows games and replaced it with their versions.  I replace the Win 7 games from the link above.  It just seems a bit puerile.

It’s even worse on iOS. It’s one of only two apps that I never, ever update as the developers seem intent on ruining them even further with every iteration.

The advert videos just go ‘on and on and on’ like a Duracell bunny… so I rarely play Microsoft Solitaire Collection games on my iPad any more.

I ‘debloat’ Win 10 during the OOBE portion of the Win 10 installation process so I never see the Win 10 versions of Microsoft Solitaire Collection now anyway.

Instead, and like others, I install the Win 7 versions from the link Elly provided above.

EDIT: Oops… that screenshot was much bigger than I intended. Sorry…

If you have an old Windows XP computer around take a look at Mauro Huculak’s post How to get the classic Windows Solitaire game on Windows10 at   https://www.windowscentral.com/how-get-classic-solitaire-back-windows-10

I followed his instructions and have had a working set of the classic solitaire games on my computer for over a year.

I’ve used the “Windows 7 Games for Windows 10” install before (it was featured in an AskWoody newsletter) but the games seemingly get wiped for me whenever I install a feature upgrade. So now, I’ve just created a Windows 7 virtual machine on VirtualBox and enjoy ad-free Solitaire, Chess, and FreeCell anytime I want. Works on Mac and Linux too, which is a bonus.

      Ads in Solitaire. INDEED!

Wow, how disappointing.  Microsoft still up to its old tricks… uninstalling things that the owner of the PC put there, just like in the earliest days of Windows 10 with Speccy and some others.  An OS should unequivocally serve the interests of the owner of the PC, as defined by himself, and no one else at all, including Microsoft.  Removing things the PC owner put there because it wants them to use the ad-laden version is not serving the interest of the owner.  If I were to ever consider Windows once again, it would not be until there were strong signs that MS had recognized all of this.  Somehow, I don’t think that’s going to happen during my lifetime.

Maybe you’d be interested in trying a Linux VM… the completely free, and ad-free “KPatience” from KDE blows the Microsoft solitaire away, IMO.  The one game has twelve forms of solitaire from which to choose, including Spider, Freecell, and Klondike (standard MS Solitaire).
