Win10 Pro 22H2, new full installation with WUmgr.

Problem:. Unwanted drivers install immediately upon connecting to the internet even using WUmgr.

Maybe I’m not fast enough, but even with the correct settings in wu manager, as soon as I connect to the internet, five to 10 drivers are downloaded and installed.

So I’m wondering, what might be the best way to keep those from downloading? Should I also have metering turned on ? Or, should I use a Group Policy option?

I really don’t want these drivers that are automatically installing since they are older.

I know this topic has had a lot of time devoted to it, but I’d appreciate your comments for this unique situation.

You can block drivers install in GPEdit.
      WUmgr doesn’t install automatically updates.
You first check for updates, than hide unwanted updates like drivers updates and install rest updates.

Thanks for the clarification and image Alex.  The link with 35 replies, doesn’t really address my question, but your image should.

BTW.  I’m not using: Group Policy setting under Windows Update – Configure automatic updates = Enabled, value 2 (notify download/install).

      My WUmgr settings are:

      1. Register Microsoft update is checked
      2. Disable Automatic Update is checked
      3. Disable Store Auto Update is checked
      4. Include Drivers is partially checked

Use GP setting “2” (Notify download/install) and there is a setting in the same area to “Do not include drivers in Windows Update”

Just to add a bit to @PKCano ‘s post above, the item dealing with “Do not include drivers with Windows Updates” is the tenth item below the other one dealing with “Configure Automatic Updates” in the list of policies.

So, find the policy listing dealing with configuring automatic updates and set it the way PK describes, then go down the list ten items below the configure automatic updates, and you should be looking at the one that deals with not including drivers with Windows Updates.

What drivers are being installed?  I always see that as a sign that you need a driver, so review the vendor of that driver and see if they have a newer one?

So I had WU manager installed with the settings below in my previous post, and here is what I got on the first internet connection.

Thank you all for your help.

Laptop? Desktop? I’d go to the manufacturer’s site and see if there are updated drivers.

That’s what’s weird. Susan. I’ve got all of the recent manufacturer device drivers. These, in the image below, are all either newer ones or older ones , which is a pain in the butt to have to try to go through them. I do know for instance that I don’t want the A-Volute and Tobi AB…. They are audio effects drivers which I don’t use or want because they can’t be uninstalled.

            Thanks for your help. Mike

Oh and from that point on wu manager worked like it would normally work as full manual setting.

But there was one particular driver that I’m curious about if anyone knows anything about it. That is an Intel system. 11.7.0.1000, which from my research is an Intel WDT watchdog timer. I’m not even sure if I need that or if I should just go for it.

And if anyone’s curious, here’s the list after I ran WU manager.  Many of these I know what they are and it’s easy enough to compare the version numbers. But, like I mentioned in my previous post, some are rather obscure.

I normally add these registry values to automatically block driver updates on Windows 10. The last one is the same as the Group Policy setting posted by Alex5723 above.

      reg add “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching” /v “SearchOrderConfig” /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

      reg add “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching” /v “DontSearchWindowsUpdate” /t REG_DWORD /d “1” /f

      reg add “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching” /v “DriverUpdateWizardWuSearchEnabled” /t REG_DWORD /d “0” /f

      reg add “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate” /v “ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate” /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

      You should !!

And your WUmgr settings should look like this :

To disable Microsoft store updates run the Store app and disable updates.
