wavy:Β  Please, don’t put Alexa right behind a window and, or in a room with mirrors that can reflect to Alexa a laser beam coming through a window. There is also the reassuring fact that whoever tries this attack on you, not only has to have it for you very seriously. It also has to know first how to setup and, once out in the field (not in a proper lab), use a fiddly optical bench with the laser, various mirrors and lenses to shape the beam and the Pockels cell needed to modulate its intensity so it carries the attacker’s words, mounted on it in just the right places. Altogether, not a simple or easy thing to do:

The paper describes different setups used to carry out the attacks. One is composed of a simple laser pointer (price $18 for three), a laser driver ($339), and a audio amplifier ($27.99). The setup can use an optional telephoto lens ($199.95) to focus the laser for long-range attacks. The laser driver and diodes are intended for lab use, a condition that requires an attacker to experience with lasers to successfully assemble and test the setups.

I suspect that this James Bond technique makes much more sense used for spying on governments and large companies, to steel their juiciest secrets, than on ordinary citizens. But first, the snoopers need to find people in those organizations that conveniently keep Alexa gadgets around so they can be attacked.

      😝
Shall I also remove the optical grade mirror positioned at 45 deg to horizontal next to it, you ask too much. πŸ˜€
Of course exploits always get easier with time.

Wavy: leave that mirror where it is. But consider placing Alexa somewhere on the ceiling, like a lamp fixture, where probing beams may not be able to reach it, but your voice will.

In any case, regular criminals, bounty hunters, collection agencies and vengeful ex ones are unlikely to resort to such means to ruin your life, because there are easier, historically well proven and ready available ways of doing that. Regular spooks, on the other hand, very well might do that to you. But if you are some spook’s enough of a high-value target to merit such a level of attention, then you may have much bigger problems to worry about than Alexa being hacked with laser beams.
