Way back in 2012 my partner bought me the newest kid on the block, a Google Nexus 7… somewhere between a tablet and a phone. It was lovely, absolutely lovely… but just couldn’t fit in to the Apple eco-system that I had taken so long to make my ailing father familiar with.

However, the 7″ form factor was absolutely perfect for my lifestyle (it was a long time ago when IT staff of all genders typically wore cargo pants as part of a scruffy ‘uniform’).

So I bought myself a Mini iPad 2… and it lived in my cargo pant’s leg pocket for 2 years, being used daily – almost hourly – to check in with my Dad every day via FaceTime and iMessage as well as all the other usual tasks like email, calendar, etc. I stopped bringing my personal laptop to work… I didn’t need it any more. I also stopped using my iPhone for anything except phone calls… who needs such a tiny screen? (I had an iPhone 4 at the time, then 5S.)

Two years on, Xmas came and I couldn’t justify the cost of a new Mini iPad as a present to myself… so I bought a refurbished Mini iPad 3 with 4 times as much storage space (‘cos I copied films to it to watch on the go – it was Wi-Fi only… streaming was just a word I had heard of but didn’t really understand, nor could afford.)

It died a death for no reason at the beginning of last year for no apparent reason. The geniuses at the Apple Store couldn’t do anything… and I was shocked at the price of a new model. I bought myself a cheaper iPad 6th Gen and used that… until I could no longer wrestle it back from my 3yr-old-granddaughter’s death grip (worse than an alligator or crocodile). So I bought myself an iPad 9th Gen… but it still doesn’t fit in my trouser side pocket like my Mini iPad 3 did.

It made me realise… I still have my dead Mini iPad 3, shrouded in it’s incredibly worn fake leather protective case. It’s time to put it out for recycling… but I miss the incredible convenience of that form factor. 🙁
