Is there a windows equivalent of the Unix backquote operator?

Perhaps this: `… the backtick character (upper left corner of most English keyboards, to the left of 1)?

(It’s used in AutoHotkey for escaping characters.)

Alas, that doesn’t do anything:

D:\>echo dir
dir

On unix you get:

~$ echo date
Wed Feb 8 07:01:00 EST 2023

There is no obvious way to read the output of a command into a batch file variable. In unix-style shells, this is done via backquoting.

The Windows command processor does not have direct backquoting, but you can fake it by abusing the FOR command. Here’s the evolution:
