I’m pretty knowledgeable in Word and much else, but fairly new to Publisher. I’ve figured out most things, but I’m puzzled about Baseline Guides, especially as they relate to headlines.

First of all, what’s the purpose of the “offset” setting on baseline guides? I’ve been able to make it do what I want, but I’m flying blind so far. I’ve got my baseline guides spaced as I want them, and the bottom one lines up with my bottom margin. I did the latter through using offset.

Second, my text usually lines up with my baseline guides, but sometimes it doesn’t, and I don’t know how to snap it into place. (Oops! I just went back to Woody’s book, and now I’m aware of the check box in Format > Paragraph that makes this happen!)

Third, I don’t know what’s the best practice for headlines. Should I put them in their own text box? If I do that, they become disconnected from the text to which they refer, which isn’t good if I greatly rearrange the publication. If I don’t put them in their own text box, then the following text doesn’t line up with the baseline guides.

Fourth, are there good books on Publisher? I’ve got Woody’s Special Edition Using Microsoft Office 2003, and it helped me get as far as I am now, but I’m looking for something more. There don’t seem to be too many Publisher books around.
