It’s year end, a time when we pull old – out of use – computers off the shelf and perform their semiannual Windows updates.

A time to sit, do nothing, and listen to the drives spin.

Just noticed that one of the workstations that has been out of use for at least six years has an app named Belarc Advisor.

A quick internet search found that The Belarc Advisor app displays a detailed profile of a computers installed software, hardware, and security vulnerabilities.

Has anyone run across the Belarc software?

Is it worth downloading and using?

    Is it safe to use?

Here is the product on the Belarc website:

The software, Belarc Advisor, is licensed for personal use only.

There is Belarc software for business, as well.

I’ve been using it for YEARS.

Very good information about the computer. Run it as Administrator. Allow it to access the Internet and update the list of security updates and catalog your network.

It lists hardware, missing security updates, licensed programs + the license keys, and installed programs. When I get a new computer, the output is one of the things I save with other important info about the computer. If you have h/w problems you have the info to find missing drivers (if you scan with some frequency so it’s up to date).

      Yes, yes & yes.
Nice concise list of stuff on your computer and stuff not. I.E. missing MS updates.
I have found their list to be a day or two behind but then that is ahead of me.

I gave it a spin years ago.  In my experience it was of little use.  All the software that I use is set for automatic updates or has a “Check for Updates” button prominently displayed in the UI.

I try to limit the number of “DO-IT-ALL” utilities to zero.  I use a handful of single purpose utilities, and that works well for me.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We were all once "Average Users". We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems, we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Three “yes” for me.  It’s not a utility you’ll use frequently, but I find occasional use helpful for a broad overview of your PC.

I find it very useful. I run it on both my desktop (Windows® 7 x64) and my laptop (Windows® 8.1 x64).
Look at the lower header Software Licenses and espy your Windows® license and key. It is otherwise difficult to obtain.

Captain Latepants strikes again with another late reply. I also have used Belarc for years, until late ’22 when I brought Speccy on board. It is fast, especially compared to Belarc. They offer a free version and Pro. I liked it so well that I paid for the Pro. It’s from the folks who brought you Ccleaner.
