AskWoody PlusExcellent news. I lamented the effective demise of the old Windows Secrets/Woody’s Windows Watch newsletter and the neglect Penton gave to its lounge. Hopefully this will put what was one of the best resources on the web back to its prime.

GuestThis announcement seems more geared towards explaining things to Windows Secret users. But what are the big changes that we here at AskWoody will see? You mention the Lounges being merged. But does that mean that the feed here at AskWoody will now contain stuff from all the Windows Secret stuff? Will there be any way to only see the stuff that would normally be on AskWoody? Will @AskWoody be changed to cover everything, or just be for Woody Heck, will these new changes even be on Askwoody.com?
I’m mostly here for the DEFCON system, though I do enjoy reading the articles. I just learned the hard way not to just update when Microsoft tells you do, and eventually found the only site that seems to tell you when updates ares safe.
Anyways, I do wish you guys well. From what has been mentioned about the Windows Secret forums, it does seem like bringing them here is a good idea. And Susan has definitely added to the site–even if the business stuff isn’t relevant to me.

ManagerGreat questions!
does that mean that the feed here at AskWoody will now contain stuff from all the Windows Secret stuff?
The main page will continue to be primarily from me and Susan, with continued assists from PKCano. We’ll also have posts from Fred Langa, Brian Livingston (!), and — if you’re a Plus member — the other contributors to the newsletter. I’m also hoping to have more guest posts.
Will there be any way to only see the stuff that would normally be on AskWoody?
The main page will have more material, but it’ll be the same high quality you’ve come to expect. The rest of the Lounge will benefit from a half-dozen highly experienced Windows Secrets Admins and (I hope) all of the MVPs and VIPs. There will be far more depth and breadth in the Lounge, and decades of material to fall back on.
I’m mostly here for the DEFCON system
That’s going to be a key part of the site overhaul. I need to get off my posterior and put together an MS-DEFCON system that’ll handle all of the versions of Windows. At the very least, it’ll have separate MS-DEFCON levels for Win 7 & 8.1, another for Win10 Home, one for Win10 Pro, and one for people who look for individual patches a-la Patch Watch.
There’s a lot of work ahead….

AskWoody PlusPlease do not discount the value of the content on Windows Secrets. Because it has been running for a long time, and the content comes from many very knowledgeable contributors, some of whom are regulars here, (and not from Penton), there is a great deal of valuable content on it. I have often found that a problem I encounter can be solved by a search on the site and, if not, the loungers can generally solve it for me. Occasionally, I can even help myself!
If Woody and his buddies can successfully merge the content of the two sites, and hold the contributors, we will have an extremely valuable resource.

GuestAlso, any chance the revised MS-DEFCON system will include some sort of feed so users can be notified when it changes? I do enjoy this site, don’t get me wrong. But there are times where I forget to check for a while.
The feed could be on Twitter, an RSS feed, or even a JSON feed (though the latter is not my favorite.) If @AskWoody links all Woody articles here, I could subscribe to that (and check out other people’s articles if they are relevant while I’m here.)

Yep, that’s the primary influence for AskWoody Plus Alerts. You’ll get an email as soon as there’s a change in MS-DEFCON status, or when something blows up.
I already have a Twitter account, @AskWoody, that’s quite active. And there’s an RSS feed for all the posts on the main page.
Still haven’t decided what to do with the @WindowsSecrets Twitter handle, but I’m phasing out both the AskWoody and Windows Secrets sites on Facebook.

GuestI was (operative verb, past tense) a Windows Secrets subscriber for YEARS until the fiasco takeover by Penton and then dropped it. Remember their tussle over lifetime subscribers?!? Anyway, I’ll gladly become a donor-subscriber once more — after the merge operation settles into its comfort zone. PLEASE keep us posted here as I rely heavily on the Patch Lady — as I did on Windows Secrets !!

AskWoody PlusPrecisely. I was also a Windows Secret reader and subscriber. After Penton, my subscription was bungled and I ceased getting the newsletter even though I had nearly a year due to me. Trying to get it resolved was wasted effort so I moved on. I’m pleased the team is reuniting! May the New Year bring great things to AskWoody!

AskWoody PlusAs a subscriber to Windows Secrets since its very beginning, [and also to Woody’s Windows/Office Watch newsletters of yesteryear] I have been so disappointed with WS over the past year or two that I have been considering dropping my subscription. The (almost) final straw was Susan’s departure–for reasons that were never made public (at least to me). This news is wonderful. Now I will not have to make that decision about renewing. Instead I just donated to Ask Woody! And will be delighted to have the best of both efforts henceforth in one package.
Best of luck to all involved in this new undertaking this new year.

ManagerThanks for the donation!
I’m in the middle of testing a new Plus membership routine. When it’s up (in the next few days?) it’ll be easy to make a donation and get all the benefits of “Plus” — all automatically.
But not to worry. I’ll be setting up a way for donors past — even those who donated months ago — to become “Plus” members. It’ll be on the honor system, but that’s what this is all about, eh?

AskWoody MVPI was going to start a new post for this, but since some of my comments have already been mentioned …
From the early days of Langalist I supported Fred’s efforts. Comes Brian and Woody and Susan etal, I couldn’t have barked louder for what really was advice to be heeded. When the “group” was around, their combined efforts resulted in the best place I had found for up-to-date information on everything Windows and a whole bunch more.Places like that are almost impossible to find and all that cyber ink and brain power isn’t totally free, so financial support is a must for it to continue. I still recall reading my first “Plus” News Letter, wasn’t free, but worth every dime I thought. I think I donated $20~ a year, sometimes more when I was flush, then I did this:
That was cool until one by one the reasons I was supporting the site left. Because of those actions the above membership status became almost worthless. I could say it was fun while it lasted, and it was, but the fallout left a bad taste.
It was a different time and different place then, I do hope they make it shine as it once did. In the scheme of all things internet related my support was just a drop in the bucket, but it was my drop.I don’t blame any of them personally, after all, the only thing that remains constant in the universe is change.

I too started with the Langa List (I don’t remember how I found out about it), which then became part of Windows Secrets, the best place on the web for computer information and for “hanging out”. I’ll bet there are a lot of folks here who got started with the Langa List.
By the way, Fred, I was always hopeful that I would be one of the lucky ones to get a visit from you to do a “once over” on my computer!

AskWoody MVPI am not positive but I think I stumbled across Fred via a search for an answer I had about Windows.
I would have turned down a visit from Fred, no need for him to die from a heart attack at my house. I could see it now, Fred: Mom board check, Power supply check, CDROM check, Modem, Hard drive, Fans, Video card check … etc … Lets put all those things back in the pretty white box for now.
Fred: what’s with all these extra ribbons?
Me: Oh those, I read they sometimes go bad and needed to be replaced or checked with a known good one.
Fred: Okay, then you know which ones are good then.
Fred: Well?

GuestIt was Window Manager before that. From 9-23-02 newsletter (9-20-02) posting:
“FRESH NEW SERVICE packs and patches are here for every version of our favorite OS, Windows. In recent weeks, I’ve screamed and hollered for needed fixes, so listen up now as I sort them all out. SSL doesn’t protect. In a recent column, I reported that SSL, which safeguards your personal data on the Web, has been hackable in Internet Explorer ever since Version 5.0, released in 1999….”

AskWoody PlusThis sounds like excellent news, as well as a bucketful of blood, sweat and tears for those setting it up!
Like many here no doubt, I subscribed to Windows Secrets but the switch to Penton led to a marked deterioration and then we had the downtime debacle, with Susan leaving the final stimulus for me to cancel my subscription. I have donated here, but I’ve no idea when I last did so although I recently asked my children if one of them would kindly give me Woody’s latest book on Windows 10 for Christmas!
In any event, once the new membership scheme becomes available I’ll be donating and following it all with interest. I wish the whole combined team (including the Secrets admins for whom I have a lot of respect) all the very best with the venture.
One suggestion if I may: As part of the “palliative care on the demise of Windows 7” can we please have coverage of how to retain Windows 7 with the minimum risk, but also a beginner’s guide to Windows 10 as many Windows 7 users will want to switch belatedly to Windows 10 and won’t have followed all the comings and goings with that OS since its inception so talk about its myriad of versions will mean nothing to them. Of course, I’ll also have the book by then!
Finally, this seems as good an opportunity as any to thank Woody and the whole team together with fellow commenters both here and at Windows Secrets for all their past efforts, and to wish them and their families a very happy Christmas and a healthy, happy, and successful New Year!

AskWoody MVPAs part of the “palliative care on the demise of Windows 7” can we please have coverage of how to retain Windows 7 with the minimum risk
Seff, that is a good suggestion, because I know there are a lot of people who want to do just that.
There is already a lot of info along those lines scattered around various forums at AskWoody. I believe the thing suggested most often is to install Linux as your host OS, and then install Windows 7 as a virtual machine within Linux. If you have enough memory (at least 8GB) in your machine, AND if you have a W7 license which will allow you to activate Windows in a VM rather than on the PC itself, you will be good to go for a very long time.
Another thing very often suggested is to install Windows 8.1 as your host OS, and then install one of the add-ons to make it look and feel just like Windows 7. This will buy you an additional three years of support from Microsoft (till Jan 2023).
I’m using both methods at home on two separate computers. Both methods work very well, just depends on your preference.

AskWoody PlusThanks Jim. I appreciate your thoughts.
I’m more interested to be honest in how best (if it’s feasible at all) amateur home users can stick with the system they know and like, rather than having to hide it behind an entirely different system. If I am going to use Windows 8.1 then I’ll switch to that instead of Windows 7, not in addition to it. I have no more interest in Linux than I have in starting to learn at my time of life about virtual machines etc. I either want to maintain my present system with minimum risk, switch to Windows 8.1 (which is only a temporary workaround rather than a permanent solution) or bite the bullet and accept the inevitability of moving to Windows 10. I think of it this way – I’m a simple computer user and I want to use my computer in a simple way!
Your ideas make perfect sense for the more knowledgeable users, and it may be that a couple of complimentary guides will be needed for both categories of user. Or it may simply be that the less knowledgeable among us will simply have to accept the inevitable and embrace Windows 10. My current thinking is that I will probably look to replace one of my two home computers next year anyway and will use that as the opportunity to look at Windows 10 and familiarise myself with it before I end up having to make an overall decision on how best to proceed at the end of the year.
Thanks again.

Dare I suggest an IMac solution? I cannot tell you how over the moon I am with my IMac — very short learning curve and zero monthly MS Defcon headaches. I purchased the cheapest model @ $1,000– if it is in your budget it sure takes all the stress away.
On another note: As a rather Newbie here I was not familiar with the older incantations but please add me to all the well-wishers for the new Woody’s. 🙂

AskWoody_MVPFor state of the art gaming, I think the next few years will be on Windows 10, so you are pretty much stuck with that.
If you want to game on 10 while doing everything else not on 10, you could buy an HD switch as suggested by MrJimPhelps here. Then, you basically have 2 computers in one, with not even a Meltdown side-channel vulnerability type risk between the two. You boot the computer you want and that’s it. If you do a gaming session, you boot 10. If not, you boot something else. This might or might not suit your needs. I wouldn’t run an out of support 7 for my more serious computing needs. Maybe it would be a good way to try Linux without having to learn about VM. If you mostly browse and want to avoid Windows snooping as much as possible, it might be worth a try. And some efforts are made to bring gaming to Linux, Valve has an interest in this, so you might be ready for later, but that later might come a lot later or never.

Bugs, crashes, errors? Yeah, probably. I’m not perfect. But I think they’ll be brief and handled by a very competent team.
Anonymous posting – yep. That was one of the crazy things I insisted upon. Windows Secrets doesn’t allow anonymous posts. I think it’s important that people be able to post anonymously, for all sorts of reasons. (You ‘Softies will certainly understand.) Every anonymous post will be vetted, as they are now. It may take longer for anon posts to appear, depending on volume, but we’ll keep you anonymouses plugged in.
That said, it’s a whole lot easier to maintain a conversation with a nonymous poster. I continue to urge everyone to get a username, by hook or by crook, and use it.

MemberGreat news, and very pleased to read that there will be a separate DEFCON for every version of Windows (for those still supported, I suppose?).
Also, not too clear on this point: Will there be an annual subscription that has to be renewed and paid for every year, e.g. via PayPal, or it will continue to be supported with donations? (I donate every year, anyway, but this question might be asked also by others here.)
Also, as I prefer not to get a lot of emails and warnings, since I visit the site regularly to see what is going on, is there going to be a choice to opt-out of such emails? Regardless of such emails, I still intend to donate or else pay a subscription, if the first, however large, did not count towards the other. That said, I would like to still be able to get the emails people receive when a new thread is started outside the Main Page by one of the loungers, and also the notices that there are messages waiting for me to read them.
Well, that is a lot of questions, so I’ll be happy with just a couple being answered.

ManagerI’m skittish about offering “lifetime” Plus memberships, given the headaches in the past. So at least for now, your membership will expire after a year. But the same rule applies – donate what you think a year’s worth of help is worth.
Every sign-up dialog has an opt-out checkbox for the Newsletters and Alerts. The email notifications you’re talking about are part of the WordPress/bbPress feature set, and they won’t change.
CADesertRat
AskWoody PlusI too was a subscriber to WS + the newsletter starting back when Brian et al was on WS. I carried a newsletter subscription up until July of last year but dropped it when most of the info in it was of no use to me, especially at the price they went to.
I’m still over there a lot (under a different user name than here) and I do like the format of the WS site (once they got it back to normal after the big hack). It will be interesting to see how this all turns out and I would certainly donate if things look good.
My question would be, since I use different user names on each site (here and WS), how will that work? Will I need to re subscribe after choosing one of the user names?
Thanks for the good news Woody and get BUSY 🙂

Right now, I’d suggest you use your AskWoody username. Then we’ll bring over your posts on Windows Secrets under your old name – but I don’t know if we’ll be able to merge them.
There’s an inherent hurdle. Windows Secrets Lounge is built on vBulletin. AskWoody is built on bbPress. Two very different animals. I don’t think there’s any way to transfer passwords from one system to the other – so we’re going to have a very fun time with that.

AskWoody PlusI believe Woody’s “Windows 8 All-In-One for Dummies” referred me to Windows Secrets. I was a freeloader for a few months before I decided to do the once-a-year subscription. When Penton/Informa took over & the Usual Suspects left, I let my subscription lapse. By then, I had been on AskWoody for a while. Sorry I hadn’t donated here, but when you setup a subscription for AskWoody Plus, I’m in!
Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

AskWoody LoungerI have never been to Windows Secrets in the past, but am certainly interested to see what this merge will bring about.
As to the “demise of Windows 7”, well for me it won’t be a demise. I WILL continue to run Windows 7 (and Windows XP), in VMware virtual machines and/or by itself. I am fully prepared to switch to Windows 8.1 as I already installed it on each of my Windows systems alongside Windows 7, but will keep a Windows 7 partition to run even after the end of support for Windows 7 in January 2020. I have bought keys for VMware Workstation 15 and VMware Fusion 11 Professional during the Black Friday sale, and will use them once I decide it is time to shift to Windows 8.1 and MacOS Sierra / High Sierra as my main OS.
I will stay away from Windows 10 for as long as possible.
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

Agree. When things are changed, it break more than fixes things. Look at how MS is all _____________ (fill in what ever word you want) with Windows 10, updates etc…Hopefully this site will not be broken for days or months after this new implementation.

AskWoody PlusI have every one of the Langa List archives stored and backed up on my XP SP3 machine. I’m so excited to read the news. I admit I did dream of a visit from a big yellow Harley one day. Can’t wait to be a part of the new forum / newsletter. Kinda feels like the Eagles Hell Freezes Over concert….
