Bridge Scoring in Excel

First off, I am no Bridge expert, just play socially over the years with some friends and got tired of paper score sheets. Over the years have developed an Excel Workbook that scores automatically. All you need to do is set the players, enter the bid, by whom, any double/redouble, number of tricks and any honours bonus. The system then does the rest, keeping tracks of games, vulnerable status, rubbers etc. Behind the scenes it is fairly basic, allowing for all the scoring options, but it does work and you don’t see those bits when in use!

What I would like some help with, is that I have designed this workbook for the 4 players, with a spreadsheet for each seating arrangement, so 6 permutations, Eg Player 1 = North, Player 2 = East, Player 3 = South, Player 4 = West, then Players 1 and 2 swap and so on and so on. In doing this I created an overall summary sheet to total up how each individual has done (you can start to see this normally is run over a weekend with everyone playing with everyone else in every permutation).

BUT, the problem (sorry to take so long to get there), I wanted to be able to enter the names in a single place and then have these write to the names of each of the spreadsheets within the workbook. I know how to copy the names across to the other spreadsheets fields but as I have links from spreadsheets to a summary sheet, I need I guess a Macro/Program to be able to define the names, hit the button and it renames the sheets themselves and updates the links….does this make sense?

Anyway, if anyone knows Excel and interested in helping to tweak my scoring system it would be much appreciated!

Why not attach a scaled-down version with only the items required to understand the setup and create the macro, or explain where you enter the names and what you want them to do.

A simple way may be to just create all the calcs with Player1 – Player4 as the “names”, then have an entry in the one sheet where you enter the names next to the player numbers and in the summary sheet, lookup as appropriate… [For more explicit instructions you need to provide us more explicit details on the setup]

Did think of using the lookup etc, but couldn’t see how this could be used to actually assign names to the Worksheets, BUT decided to have a further play (been a while since I used macros) and found that it was fairly easy to RECORD a Macro to rename and then edit and extend the macro program to find the Player Names and then set the names of the 6 worksheets to the various permutations/pairings.

So, end result (nearly done – still tweaking), have a fairly flexible scoring system that just needs names assigning. Doing a bit of tidying up, have attached some images as examples…..

You will see that when we play we also apply a wager on our bridge of a penny a point, hence the money element on the screens. This can easily be deleted or ignored if not required.

I still don’t understand the need for a macro. [noparse]If E1:H1 has, Adam, Bob, Colin, and Dave, respectively then you can create formulas A23:A26, D4:D7, D11:D14, F17:F20, N4:N27. On the player name pages, you can also link to these 4 cells.[/noparse]

For A3:A19, since you have 2 names per cell, you could create a combined reference. For example in A3:
=E1 & ” ” & F1
to give “Adam Bob”. Though I would recommend inserting an additional column a second column to read each name in its own cell.

For the worksheet tabs, I would keep them generic. Instead of Adam Colin Bob Dave you could use: Players 1324. And Colin Adam Bob Dave would be Players 3124 or even just P3124 to shorten them up to see more at a time.

But without a file and only a rudimentary understanding I can only speculate on how I would do things.

You have pretty much got the issue there. Just not keen on having the Tabs labelled 1234, 1432, etc and wanted the names instead, achieved this with a Macro in the end!

Have used lookups and combined references in the fields so all happy there and the names are only entered once, the rest is picked up via such formula.

Thanks for your help, but I think I am there with either numbered Tabs with no macro, OR named Tabs with.
