        Canon DSLR Camera Infected with Ransomware Over the Air

        Vulnerabilities in the image transfer protocol used in digital cameras enabled a security researcher to infect with ransomware a Canon EOS 80D DSLR over a rogue WiFi connection.

        A host of six flaws discovered in the implementation of the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) in Canon cameras, some of them offering exploit options for a variety of attacks.

        The final stage of an attack would be a complete takeover of the device, allowing hackers to deploy any kind of malware on the camera.

        Camera manufacturers should consider adding a (waterproof) toggle switch directly connected to the wireless module instead of burying airplane mode inside series of menus as a software option.

          … Well yeah, would be nice. Though some models have a quick toggle for the wifi functionality already. (And GPS and whatever.) Direct to the module isn’t a strict requirement as long as it’s easily reachable, which it is on mine…

          Don’t know about Canon though, that’s not the brand I use – some of my lenses are older than I am and work unmodified on the DSLR, and that rules out Canon EF mount.
