Can’t print webpages

When I try to print a webpage all that prints is the HTML stuff “behind” it. I’m running Win 7 and IE 8. Everything was fine for about a week after I installed Win 7, but starting yesterday all it sends to the printer is HTML. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks for any help.

Do you see the same thing in Print Preview, or only in the actual printout?

If it’s only the printout, I wonder whether there is an odd setting in the printer driver. If you click the Preferences button in the Print dialog, can you see anything that looks as though it might be relevant??

As a workaround, what happens if you print to PDF? There are several free PDF print drivers (at least for 32-bit versions of Windows), so you don’t need Acrobat to give it a try.

I see the same thing in Print Preview and the actual printout. I get a good printout with FireFox. So there must be something messed up with with my IE8. I’ve looked and looked, but I can’t see a setting in IE8 that looks like it would fix the problem. It was working fine until all of a sudden it started printing HTLM instead of webpages.

Open IE then go to-Tools-Internet Options.Then click on the Programs tab put a check mark in the box next to.Tell me if IE is not the default web browser.If that doesn’t work for you.Then click on the,Advanced tab Scroll down to Printing.Make sure their is Not a check mark in-Print back round colors & images.IF neither one of the suggestions above work.Then at the bottom of the of the Advanced tab again.Click on the Restore advanced settings.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I still get nothing but lots of pages of HTML. Obviously something changed after I’d been using Win7 for about a week. But I have no idea what it was. Maybe something in the registry got messed up.

I’ve had the same problem for months. Switched to Chrome for browsing, especially when I know I’m going to need to print.

I’ve run into the same problem. As a workaround, I select the text I want, dopy it to the clipboard, and paste it into word to print. You can get some strange formatting this way since word wants to put some of the text in tables.

I’m getting less excited about switching to Windows 7. 🙁

Some threads on the Microsoft forums for Win7/IE8 suggested:

(1) Reselect IE as your default browser.

(2) Reset your User Account Control settings to the default in the Control Panel. Not sure of the connection between those settings and printing from the browser, but it’s worth a test.

Someone also mentioned this very ancient Knowledgebase article regarding IE4:

“When you try to print a Web page using Internet Explorer or a Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) message using Outlook Express, HTML source code may be printed instead of the Web page or message you are viewing. This problem can occur if temporary files (.tmp) are associated with a text editor (such as Notepad).”

Like jhowardii I’ve given up on printing with IE8. I installed FireFox and whenever I need to print anything from the internet I use FireFox. The combination of 64-bit Win7 and IE8 is missing the boat somewhere when it comes to printing web content with a browser. Maybe MS will see the light some day and fix the problem (but they haven’t in eight years).

I know I suggested this before but this is a revised version;
To reset Internet Explorer settings

[*] Close any Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.
[*] Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.
[*] Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
[*] Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
[*] Select the Delete personal settings check box if you would like to remove browsing history, search providers, Accelerators, home pages, and InPrivate Filtering data.
[*] In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
[*] When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the settings, click Close, and then click OK.
[*] Close Internet Explorer.
Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer. Also when you have IE open.Go to;Tools-Manage Add-Ons.Cllick on Accelerators.Disable anything that looks new or not so familiar to you.

For printing web pages I use Readability from :

It allows you to print pages without the ads and other junk on the page.

Have you tried disabling addins?

I use Bullzip to print to a PDF file.
Then I can read it, save, print it or delete it.

It works great, saves a lot of paper and best of all it’s free..

And, it prints the ENTIRE page including the parts not visible on the screen..

Yes, I checked the KB article and also disabled the add-ons. No joy. I appreciated the suggestions, but they didn’t fix the problem.

Thanks for the info. I gave it a try. It’s definitely a hit and miss deal. It worked fine on some webpages, but not on others. As far as I could tell, even when it does work on a webpage it doesn’t work on any pictures on the webpage. But when it does work on a webpage, and pictures aren’t an issue, the results look pretty good. I just discovered that even when the webpage looks good in Readability the printing is another issue. There’s still a lot of HTML stuff in the print copy, but not as much as before using Readability. Using FireFox instead of IE still looks like the best solution.
