I was on the verge of posting a question about this, but then the Surface Pro “Signature Keyboard with Slim Pen 2” that I was waiting on arrived right before I did so. I’ve done a “make-ready” on several Surface Pros (starting with Model 7) over the years and never noticed this problem before. After I’d done a bare-metal install (which I always do) of Windows 11 Pro 22H2 I noticed that checkboxes appeared next to all the folders (and files) in spite of the fact that I had turned off that “feature” in File Explorer. I had a Microsoft Desktop Set 3050 connected via a USB dongle, so it had a pretty standard wireless keyboard & mouse combo attached to it. In doing a little research on the Microsoft Forums it seems that the consensus was that this was due to not being able to turn off the “tablet mode” for Windows 11, which you apparently could in Windows 10. For some reason Windows thinks you need those checkboxes when the OS is in “tablet mode” (MS needs to give us the back the option, like we used to have). I tried all sorts of fixes (most of them having to do with “registry hacks”) but nothing helped. (This behavior was noted on other brands of tablets, not just Microsoft products, by the way) Anyway, the high-dollar keyboard showed-up just in the nick of time and naturally I couldn’t wait to attach it, to confirm or deny the theory. Well just like magic, the checkboxes immediately disappeared as soon as the keyboard was attached (and I closed & reopened File Explorer). Needless to say I experimented with this multiple times before I was convinced, so apparently it’s the “real deal”. I guess the fact that all the previous Surface Pros that I configured started out with Windows 10 Pro and were subsequently upgraded to Windows 11 Pro (and coincidentally also had the Microsoft Surface Keyboard attached from the get-go), the problem had never manifested itself before. Anyway, this is just kind of an “FYI” report, in case anybody else finds themselves in similar circumstances…
