Is the new Microsoft Edge that just downloaded to my Win 10 1903 with the monthly update the same as ChrEdge? On my Win 10 it just opened automatically, but on my Win 8.1 it would not open unless I accepted the terms which included AUTOMATIC UPDATES (after all Woody has complained about!!) How can I use it on 8.1 without also getting the autoupdate? Thanks.

ManagerIf you install CrEdge through Windows Update, you won’t be able to uninstall it with normal methods. You will have to use PwoerShell.
If you want CrEdge, download it from Microsoft and install it as a separate program. Theoretically, you will then be able to uninstall if if you no longer want it.

AskWoody LoungerThanks PK. Windows Update auto installed to both Win 10 and Win 8.1, but on Win 10 it opened and worked without me doing anything. On 8.1 it is there (installed) but when I click on it, I have to accept the autoupdate requirement or it will not run. I do not want to uninstall it – just be able to use it without having it auto update (per Woody’s recommendation). Anyway it probably does not matter as I quit using Explorer on 8.1 a long time ago and switched to Chrome with less complicated updates and easy to turn on/off updates.

AskWoody MVPMicrosoft has not stated how the update will work for versions installed by WU. If you install Edge then it runs a separate update run periodically. The released version is updated approximately every six weeks with the possibility of security updates in between. The interim updates do not happen very often. This is pretty much the same schedule as Chrome.

AskWoody MVPIt will be the default browser installed with Windows in future feature updates.
I think updating it now depends on how it was originally installed. If it was installed using WU you can probably use wushohide to defer.
Chromium Edge is not optional. It is being distributed automatically to replace the original Edge. Is what optional?

AskWoody LoungerThanks Alex5723 and anonymous. I never realized browser updating and Win 10, 8.1, … was a separate process. Sorry, Woody, I thought you recommended pausing Browser update (as I thought part of monthly update). I always thought Explorer, Edge was updated with the monthly KBxxx’s. Never too old to learn something new!!
