…Today, we’re announcing new ways to keep your Chromebooks up and running even longer. All Chromebook platforms will get regular automatic updates for 10 years — more than any other operating system commits to today. We’re also working with partners to build Chromebooks with more post-consumer recycled materials (PCR), and rolling out new, power-efficient features and quicker processes to repair them. And at the end of their usefulness, we continue to help schools, businesses and everyday users find the right recycling option….

Starting in 2024, if you have Chromebooks that were released from 2021 onwards, you’ll automatically get 10 years of updates. For Chromebooks released before 2021 and already in use, users and IT admins will have the option to extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release (after they receive their last automatic update)…

To save you a dry read:

Guess my next device, still won’t be a chromebook 🙂

      Win8.1/R2 Hybrid lives on..

… and those Chromebooks released before 2021, “For devices prior to 2021 that are eligible to receive extended updates, some features and services may not be supported.” 🙃 I already buried mine, even if the device had qualified for the automatic 10 years it would still be a goner. Was a Black Friday cheap price and came in handy for a short time.

MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, and SOS at times.

Getting pushback from the schools.  And “more than any other vendor”

Google.  Please.  That’s business standard in operating system support.

Does this apply only to Chromebooks being used in educational environments or does it apply to Chromebooks used anywhere?

Ok, here’s the next question, how do you figure out if the Chromebook you’re using and was bought around the 2021 timeframe is good for 10 years support or not?

My Chromebook adventure continues to evolve, with having better success using Microsoft 365 web tools in 2023 (the user interface, jumping from actual Chromebook apps – Outlook & Office – to using Chrome tabs whenever you open up a document or mailbox, needs work) and it seems to handle my personal / corporate account with ease (though again it gets confusing, if you don’t manually manage the tabs).  Using an Acer spin 7/13 i5 (including for this post) and I’m happy with it, as long as whatever I’m working on isn’t format critical (i.e. business formatted Word or PowerPoint).

      Take care,

They won’t get 10 years of support just up to 8 or less.
